But any white male or female who gets PLEDGED (for real) in a black sorority or frat, now THAT is more meaningful to me. I know quite a few white girls and guys 20 years ago who actually JOINED black organizations and stepped their asses off so they got the FULL meaning and purpose behind steppin'. It's not just steps contrary to popular belief. I think I may see what you mean. At my undergrad school, our Omegas taught a white fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, how to step. They performed at a step show and they BROUGHT it! ...But it was soon forgotten. On the other hand, there was a lone white guy who pledged Phi Beta Sigma. He got his ASS KICKED on line and he was roundly disrespected by both the black and white student body for years. He was an average stepper at first -- no worse than some of the black bros, but people used to show up to step shows and Sigma jams just to diss him. Anyway, he showed his loyalty to the organization, he learned its history and legacy like the back of his hand, and his bros always stuck up for him -- and these days he gets CRAZY respect from just about everyone who was part of the campus community when he was there. He's actively involved in the Sigma's alumni chapter at my undergrad school, and in many ways he's now the glue of their fraternity there. It's something I'd not put myself through -- and something I think he shouldn't have had to go through -- but in hindsight there really is something special about the totality of that experience he took on. [Edited 2/24/10 10:48am] That's precisely what I'm talking about. I grew up in Austin, a college town with about 100,000 college students. Only about 5% black so the Greeks were extra close. Greek weekends were MAJOR down there so they came from several states to compete. I was going to step shows that lasted 6 hours or more since 10th grade. I also stepped in college myself. I ain't taking nothing away from these gals, they did their thing and I already got this email yesterday from some black folks. But white folks stepping ain't nothing new to me but they were usually part of a black organization which meritted real respect from me and most black Greeks I know because of what they went through to get it. Also, white Greeks being taught to step by black Greeks has also been a common novelty at step shows for ages. My point, which I said from the start, is that this, in and of itself is meaningless to ME, without the full context of pledging to a black fraternity or sorority. Didn't you go to school up North? What's ironic to me from your story is that anytime white folks pledged down here, they became instant celebs on the yard and INSTANTLY got mad respect after crossing over based on the fact that they would willingly join a black frat/sorority and subject themselves to shit that would NEVER happen if they pledged a white one. They were generally viewed as being really "down" because of their commitment as long as they didn't "act black" or try to be something they're not. [Edited 2/24/10 12:43pm]

I've always known white folks who can dance their asses off. But don't kid yourself, there are definitely some excessively rhythmically challenged white folks walking around. It is what it is.

I want to see some black folks try and learn that Irish step dancing(?) that Michael Flatley does. It looks hard. I watched his show that he did on broadway about 4 or 5 year ago on PBS and fell in love with it. Sh*t I watched it twice as a matter of fact, and not embarassed to say as a Black female, I love to watch that type of dancing. I also agree that in today's generation, many of the white kids can dance a whole lot better than the young generation before the mid 80s, that's for sure. [Edited 2/24/10 12:38pm]

[Edited 2/24/10 12:38pm] Irish step dancing is pretty impressive. Was it not Flatley who did a duo performance with Savion Glover some years ago on an award show? If I recall correctly, it started out choreographed as a battle, but it progressed into them dancing together in their complementary styles. It was very cool. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

And the story is ironic against yours, given how the Northern U.S. has always liked to think of itself as so much more racially progressive than the South. It was weird: He'd always hung out with black students, and folk generally left him alone. But the minute he pledged Sigma, you'd have thought he came out of the closet as a Martian. Once he decided to pledge, a certain cache of the sisters on the yard were ALL OVER him! That confused some of the other sisters and, of course, pissed off the bros. And the white folk on campus simply didn't know what the hell to make of this mess. It was a 3-ring circus of haters there for a while... but he won out in the end. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

In my experience, all the white dudes who pledged a black frat only dated sistas and the white girls only dated black guys. The guys were usually cutie pies too. We had a white Alpha that was known as Todd the White Alpha. That became his first name after awhile. He had NO shortage of chocolate honeys after him. We were friends and I used to kick it at his apartment and it was a veritable parade of hoes in and out of that joint. Now, I know from personal experience that non-black girls pledging definitely got questioned about their "preference" while on line and prolly had it worse, in that regard, than the white guys pledging.

Hey, those girls did a great job. Very creative in their moves, not boring. It's just that step dancing has been done more by African-Americans, so I guess this is why this received the reaction it did.

I'm just sayin that even if they come from Lilly White U.S.A. I like seein the crowd give 'em props. I've always liked that sort of thing. Like when on Showtime @ the Apollo some white chick or dude came out on amateur night and you'd hear the crowd all and then be on their feet if they kicked ass. I like when skill transcends color.
