It's because music is the most important thing of those things that are not important

Mick Jagger once said in 1977 that "Today, if we were an amateur band, we could not make it" or something like that, just because they released two sorry albums like It's only R&R, 1974 and Black and Blue, 1976, and even then they were still writing classics like Fool to Cry... But in 2010, if you win AI, well that's all you need for a successful (yet crappy) 15-years career , no matter how disposable your albums are (which have been written by some overpayed professional songwriters anyway...) The sorry state of current mainstream pop music makes you admire groups like Coldplay or Arcade Fire , no matter how flawed they are... [Edited 2/22/10 10:57am] Bullshit. The music industry has always been this way. People have always been told what they should like and not like from day one. For every "great single" back then there were countless shitty ones. This is NOT a new concept. You can just look back and remember on the great songs, totally forgetting the shitty ones. Just like people will do years from now. However, more than any other time before, you've got more music by more people at your fingertips. From the artist on huge labels to the artist making music in their mom's basement and posting it on myspace. Quite your fucking complaining and go find the music you like and stop wasting your time complaining about what other people like. thank you. american i dol is reesponsibe for ruining the record busines, global warming and the colts losing the super bowl. it's a music reality show. it just shows you how hard it is to break in the biz if you have to compete with 10,000 other people just to get seen. i guess people think you just sing in the local bar and somebody will discover you and sign you to a lucrative deal. at least HALF of the people on idol had some kind of recording deal before and it didn't work out or they got dropped.

I don't get the hate at all...especially when clueless people think it's a bunch of talentless people on there. Sure a couple that are popular might not be that great, but most can really sing, really, really sing. It takes more than just a good voice to be a good singer. I don't know how to explain it better than that. Either you get or you don't, I guess. Plenty of contestants on AI have great singing voices, but I have yet to hear one whose voice draws me in to listen to them. Everything I've heard from AI contestants (or Canadian Idol, for that matter) is just bland, pale imitations. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I'd like to know who Kelly Clarkson is imitating...in fact, a lot of artists totally copy her style now. As for Canadian Idol, it's not even comparable to American Idol. It's a total joke.

The only criticism I could lay at it's door (if it's like UK versions) is its exploitation of the (seemingly) mentally ill in the audition stages. Otherwise, change the channel. I change the channel but it's all over the "Today" show the next morning, Larry King does episodes about it, the DJs discuss it the next morning on the oldies radio stations of all things, and when I turn on the TV Guide channel to look at the chart to see what's on TV, they are showing a damn episode of it on the top half of the screen. I have to turn the sound down because just hearing it depresses the hell out of me. You can't escape the bullshit. Andy is a four letter word.
