It happened recently in the Atl at the Sprite Step Off Challenge. And just who are these white chicks? They’re representing Zeta Tau Alpha out of … Arkansas and they stepped away with the $100,000 grand prize. Chew on that while you’re checking them out.

Because, traditionally its practiced by black fraternities and sororities. No race cards "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

Yet another sign of the apocalypse But seriously, is this a "black" sorority? If not, I ain't impressed cuz anybody with rhythm can learn choreography. But any white male or female who gets PLEDGED (for real) in a black sorority or frat, now THAT is more meaningful to me. I know quite a few white girls and guys 20 years ago who actually JOINED black organizations and stepped their asses off so they got the FULL meaning and purpose behind steppin'. It's not just steps contrary to popular belief.

But it's clear to see they had some skills that crowd didn't seem to mind recognizing that. That's kinda cool for what it's worth alone.

Meaning that if they were with a black sorrority it wouldn't matter because black or white (or whatever) they would be expected to have (or learn) those skills? I get that. I'm just sayin that even if they come from Lilly White U.S.A. I like seein the crowd give 'em props. I've always liked that sort of thing. Like when on Showtime @ the Apollo some white chick or dude came out on amateur night and you'd hear the crowd all and then be on their feet if they kicked ass. I like when skill transcends color. Corny but it makes me all . [Edited 2/24/10 8:34am]

I know quite a few white girls and guys 20 years ago who actually JOINED black organizations and stepped their asses off so they got the FULL meaning and purpose behind steppin'. It's not just steps contrary to popular belief. I think I may see what you mean. At my undergrad school, our Omegas taught a white fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, how to step. They performed at a step show and they BROUGHT it! ...But it was soon forgotten. On the other hand, there was a lone white guy who pledged Phi Beta Sigma. He got his ASS KICKED on line and he was roundly disrespected by both the black and white student body for years. He was an average stepper at first -- no worse than some of the black bros, but people used to show up to step shows and Sigma jams just to diss him. Anyway, he showed his loyalty to the organization, he learned its history and legacy like the back of his hand, and his bros always stuck up for him -- and these days he gets CRAZY respect from just about everyone who was part of the campus community when he was there. He's actively involved in the Sigma's alumni chapter at my undergrad school, and in many ways he's now the glue of their fraternity there. It's something I'd not put myself through -- and something I think he shouldn't have had to go through -- but in hindsight there really is something special about the totality of that experience he took on. EVER. I don't care for structured and organized step competitions all that much. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Sorry. I always wanted to step, but never had the chance... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
