I always tip at least 25%, but mostly 30% and beyond, and then my husband gives me shit about it.

You know, this might be why I'm so hard on Tiger Woods. He dated waitresses too, and from what they all said, he didn't tip for SHIT.

I've always read that if the service sucks you should still leave something -- a quarter, a dollar or something -- otherwise they may think you simply forgot. But if you leave an insultingly low tip, they'll get the hint. (You could always write a little note on the receipt, too.) The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. I notice in countries that don't tip that the service sucks. Even if waitresses/waiters get paid a living wage one day (which I hope happens), I'd still tip. It gives them incentive. I have news for you: customer service sucks in the USA. It is partially a result of the degrading values that have weakened America for the last decade. I dont pay for bad or even mediocre service. ONly exceptional service deserves a tip. I will readily tip for that.

CarrieMpls said: If restaurant owners were to pay their staff more, they’d have to charge more. Which, they could just call it a mandatory service charge on every bill. So you’d be paying that tip anyway – only now the restaurant is dictating the amount.
The way it stands today, servers are incented to provide better service by getting bigger tips, especially for repeat business. If they all got the same amount, they may not be as much. In a capitalistic economy in a depressed state such as the US is today, competitive forces would eliminate the lazy and uninspired emmployees. Anyone not willing to provide good service can be easily replaced by one of the several people who are unemployed and need work. The job is unskilled labor after all so most people could do it and do it well with the proper work ethic, integrity, and pride. Business owners avoid those costs that go with paying theie people better - social security taxes, health benefits, etc. If they could charge more money and clear a greater profit margin, they would do it and advertise the fact that tipping is not required at their businesses. People would flock to a place that had a feasible flat price increase instead of a bogus percentage system which has nothiong to do wit thelevel of service provided. THe waiter uses the same amount of time and effort to bring me a glass of water as to bring me a lobster - but based on some dumb percentage rule, I would pay far more in tip for the lobster.

I will get the same or better service for nothing. I will tip the person who goes the complete extra mile only.

I think most people don't tip for bad service and then each person has their own way of measuring good and bad service. Heck there are folks who will only tip if the waiter/waitress is cute. Also there are plenty of dining establishments that pride themselves on good customer service - so not everything in the US is fucked up. Maybe you've been eating at the wrong dives, maybe you catch somebody on a bad day, maybe your waiter/waitress is inexperienced or maybe you come in as a problem child.

I love bait threads I miss mirrorsbestfriend! He was actually hilarious, but the person who was responsible for his 'persona' also posted a regretfully racist series of comments in the M&M forum. Then slipped up, forgot to log back in as mirrorsbestfriend, and posted as 'mirrorsbestfriend' using the other account he was using to post racist comments. So basically, she shot himself in the foot, and I'm guess all of his alters were deleted. I love bait alters, so long as they're not mean. I mean, come on--some of the best threads in M&M result in riled up....erm.... enthusiasts.

OK, this is kind of weird (and maybe even sort of mean) but if the waiter or waitress is ugly or really dorky, I tip them even more than other waiters. I don't know why.

I don't know why. it's very weird! I didn't notice myself doing this until a few years ago, then I realized, holy crap---I totally tip the 'misfits' simply because they're misfits I know in some way I'm judging .... and then compensating.... but I just seem to do it automatically without being able to stop. My brother-in-law is the same way. When he was donating money to a charity for 'adopting a foreign kid' by sending money to fund their education, he chose an older child in their early teen years. When we asked him why he chose one who was close to graduation, etc. etc. he replied that he felt that everyone feels more sorry for the younger ones, and they probably get most of the money from these charities. So he gave to an older child thinking they probably didn't get as much sympathy. weird, but I guess it's cool.
