Do you mean a theme song rather? I don't think too much incidental music from TV series has been released.
I think Danny Elfman's theme to The Simpsons is a piece of art. We've all probably just become too familiar with it by this point to recognize its greatness though. The Twin Peaks theme is of course a though one to beat. | |

There are a huge number of awesome TV theme songs, but there were very few TV show soundtracks until Miami Vice came out. Part of the reason was because licensing fees for original popular music were so expensive, so a lot of shows just used some cover knockoffs as background music. Then a few other shows began putting out soundtracks (Moonlighting, Thirtysomething), but it really came into vogue when the early FOX TV dramas (Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Party of Five, New York Undercover) and later the WB shows (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dawson's Creek, Felicity) not only began featuring cool music during their shows but promoting it as well during commercial breaks. In fact, Ally McBeal hired Vonda Shepard as their music director, and The O.C. hired a full-time music consultant who worked A&R for the show, and she later did the same for Grey's Anatomy.
