Hey now! You guys are REALLY tough on Tiger.

I've been tougher than any of y'all but I want to say - I was impressed with his apology.

Yeah, he read it but who wouldn't have? He had a lot to say.

He took responsibility time and time again, and he sincerely apologized to everyone. Of special note was his apology to those parents who've used him as a role model. Those of you that think Tiger owes nothing to anybody are certainly not on the same wavelength as Tiger.

I applaud him for what he said and how he said it. He acted like a man.

rolleyes He said everything the people who are judging him wanted to hear. Doesn't mean he truly means it or that he regrets bangin' all them sub-par hoes, it ONLY means that he's sorry he got caught and lost all that money. He was motivated by self-preservation pure and simple not regret. He still appeared arrogant, unapologetic, and ingenuine to me. He shoulda kept his mouth closed and kept it moving cuz in a year none of this is gonna matter. His time for damage control was 3 months ago, this shit is anti-climactic to say the least.

I agree that it took some guts to come out and admit to LOTS of ppl that he messed up big time.
I am not sure why the BBC News is sitting around analyzing it. Though I do not understand why they sit around and analyze football/soccer games either, what do I know?

If none of this is going to matter in a year, then it would seem the only reason he did this was to preserve his marriage. And I believed him when he said that was all that matters to him right now.

Yeah, he's still got some arrogance. But no one's going to eliminate 34 years of arrogance in 3 months.

This public spectacle had ZERO to do with his marriage. He's prolly been apologizing to her til he's blue in the face. How does his marriage benefit from this added publicity when things were dying down? It doesn't at all. Elin is gonna do what she's gonna do, and I'd bet all my shoes that she did not ask or want him to do this.

This show was strictly for the golf and sponsorship powers that be because everyone knows he's gotta flog himself publicly before he can earn again. This gives everyone the excuse, "Well, he apologized to all us so it's okay for us to resume paying him billions." Without this press conference, business can't go back to normal. And if they've already lost $12 billion in three months they cannot afford to go a year with him in hiding.

Tiger Woods finally speaks: 'I am deeply sorry'
By Shane Bacon

On the 84th day, Tiger Woods finally spoke. It had been something we all expected would happen before it did, but there he was, in front of a camera, blazer and purple shirt, speaking of transgressions and remorse and things that aren't related to the little white ball he so fantastically flies through the air.

Tiger gave us what appeared to be a previously outlined statement from his abundant PR team, and when he was done, pleading for people to "believe in me again" we were all left with the news that Tiger is very, very sorry for what he did.

Tiger's mom, Tim Finchem and fellow PGA Tour player and former Stanford teammate Notah Begay III were in attendance, but Elin was not. That didn't stop Tiger from speaking about her most of the time.

Tiger admitted during the press conference that he is the only one to blame, and vehemently denied any domestic violence from wife Elin on Thanksgiving night. He also apologized to his family, friends and fans, and said he thought he played by different rules because of money and fame, but agrees that was wrong.

Tiger admitted "he has a long way to go," but he is taking steps in the right direction, and said that no matter what people want to know about his marriage, it is going to stay within the family. "Please leave my wife and kids alone," Tiger stated.

As for golf, Tiger said that he will return to golf one day, he just doesn't know when that day will be. He also didn't rule out it being in 2010, but no date was promised.

All in all it was the press conference we expected. Preempted, selective, and in typical Tiger fashion, guarded. Nobody will ever know if Tiger has changed, but it sure sounds like he meant it.

(i'm waiting for the video to transfer over to youtube) blahblah

That was different. It was only one, she was totally discredited, and the charges were dropped. Plus, there are hundreds of basketball players and several high profile stars in the NBA. It's not ALL about Kobe.

Tigga has been the face of golf for a decade. But he still woulda been alright eventually even if the endorsements took years to come back. But without this press conference showing some attrition it woulda taken longer AND never returned to the pre-scandal levels.

I see it 100% different than that.

I sure don't think he could have just refused to talk about this forever and that would have solved all problems.

shrug I didn't say anything about not EVER talking about it. I'm specifically refering to this staged, fake ass press conference with no questions allowed. Anyone in his high profile position who is TRULY trynna show remorse and address their misdeeds as a man, is gonna sit across from a reporter and open themselves up to all the ugly questions, answer them openly, honestly, and directly, rather than hide behind his mama's skirt. You see a man, I see a continuation of his calculated, punkish behavior. But I don't think he owed this to anyone.

I don't know. Compare what Woods just did with what Mark McGwire did with Bob Costas.

IMHO, McGwire came off looking a lot worse after that than Woods did after this.

Any parent who would seriously hold Tigga or any other athlete up to their kid as someone to aspire to b like ONLY because they excel at a sport is crazy or naive, or both.

And another thing - parents ARE role models to their kids. As a parent of two teenagers, I do my best to be a role model for them.

But are my wife and I their ONLY role models? Of course not!

We always look for people that have accomplished things that we haven't, and that would provide a positive model for our kids to follow. I think I'm pretty cool, but even I know that I haven't accomplished everything in the world that might possibly interest my kids.

And guess what? Lots of times, the kids choose the outside role models. It doesn't mean their parents are failures as role models, it means that people have more than one or two role models.

Every parent will tell you that.

That's the point! Tiger wasn't held up as a role model solely because of his athletic accomplishments. He and his father promoted Tiger as someone who would change the world for the positive!

They said, "Follow Tiger - he is someone to look up to".

And you're wrong about holding up someone as a role model because they're an athlete. I hold up LOTS of athletes to my kids SOLELY because of what they accomplished on the field of play.

But I hold them up as models of HOW TO WIN, HOW TO PREPARE, and HOW TO PRACTICE.

You're painting with too broad a brush, IMHO.
