I think we need to be careful in discussions like these not to fall into the "real women have curves" trap. Real women come in ALL sizes.

seriously, when healthy skinny women get comments like barf it seems no better than saying same thing about a bigger woman. It makes me wonder how any woman could exist without a body image complex--gross when fat, gross when thin. shake

That is definitely true.

Being involuntarily thin all of my life, I personally loathe the term "skinny." Larger-sized people (especially overweight women) think it's alright to call slim people that, but it isn't. Not all of us want to be as thin as we are, and many larger people don't understand the fact that for some of us, being a "hard-gainer" is considerably more difficult than being "hard-losers" like them (regarding weight).

It's not like it was purposley done and WHY he thought it was OKAY to say that I do not know!!

I can relate to that.

Who cares? So runway models are stick thin - if that's what they want to show to show off their clothes then fine.

Girls seriously don't look at runway models and want to look like them. They look at Victoria Secret chicks, singers and actresses - and although most are thin too they are not like these runway chicks.

As vitriolic and stupid as this is....I agree with the sentiment.

Even in the real world, at least in my experience, the first people to call a normal, healthy woman fat are gay men. Not straight men, not other women. Gay men.

A high proportion of fashion designers (not to mention model recruiters) are also gay men. The fashion industry has, for a very long time now, dictated not only an unrealistic body type but a dangerously unhealthy one as the ideal. IMO it's hard to think there might not be a connection.

And the vast legions of straight people who make fashion a multibillion-dollar industry the world over are too stupid to collectively say, "No!?" confuse

I know many gay men who do call "normal, healthy" women fat. But they're almost always of a generally misogynous type that'd find absurd flaws about any woman. The same guys would swear up and down a thin woman, on the other hand, was throwing up all of her food. confused Meanwhile, I know not only just as many gay men who adore women regardless of their size, but many who are actually inclined toward -- even romanticize -- full-figured women as quintessentially diva-like.

Anyway, if these homos run today's fashion industry, my guess is they also did (albeit closeted) 40, 60, 80 years ago when a more curvaceous figure was in vogue.

I suspect the ups and downs of what is a desirable weight are dictated more along societal lines -- and if the fashion industry's disproportionate gayness has any role, it's only insofar as we ('mos) seem in many artistic fields to accentuate aesthetic gender ideals that already are venerated.

Butt yes, however, breasts are not usually affected by how much a woman eats, so "eating a cheeseburger" will usually not increase bust size. Just look at comedian Mo'Nique's chest. She was considered overweight, but her bra size was no more than an A cup.

Eating would help under-muscle toned men though. So: Pecs and abs are necessary, so go eat and do some push-ups, fellas. lol

That's just not true. lol

Runway models are not people in their prime at all - they are just really, really thin chicks...natural or not, I dunno.

And most people would have to seriously work hard to be that thin - really hard. That hardly puts someone in their prime.

So...a woman is in her prime between the ages of 16 and 18? Because that's how old a lot of the runway models are.

These are not mature women. They are teenagers (and late bloomers, at that). Trust me - as soon as these girls' growth catches up with them, their careers (at least, their runway careers) are over.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

But their body frames are smaller. They are shorter as well.

I agree that the western world at large (ha!) promotes obesity, and the US is mostly to blame for that.

But the fashion industry is most definitely at fault for promoting unrealistic beauty ideals as well. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

Again, I don't think that people look at the fashion industry like they did in the 80s and 90s. Girls used to want to be runway models, now a days...no one even knows who these chicks are and most people think those girls are actually really unattractive so I don't think the fashion industry even tries to promote these women as being attractive or ideal - if they do it's just within their very secluded, very delusional circles.

It's still the images we are bombarded with every day, though. It's in every magazine, billboard, tv, etc. No one is even real anymore - everyone's photoshopped. Heck, there are people on here who won't even post their own pictures without photoshopping out lines on their forehead or a bit of flab on their arm.
That's what I mean by unrealistic - we aren't ever looking at real people anymore - it's an artist's rendering of a person. And most people, especially impressionable young people, still don't know that.

I'm not saying that at all. lol Our diet does effect how we evolve as a people but one person can not change their musculo-skeletal make-up. It is not realistc to think that all western women should be the same size as asian women.
If I tried to become a size 2 it would be extremely unhealthy for me to do so because it would likely be physically impossible.
