Canada clinched first overall in gold medal wins on the second last day of competition[4] and became the first host nation since Norway in 1952 to lead the gold medal count. The United States clinched first in total medals—their second time doing so—and set a record for most medals won at a single Winter Games with 37 total medals.

Canada defeats Americans in hockey final to get 14th gold and 26th medal

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Golden Team Canada is on top of the hockey world.

The men's hockey team capped off the best ever Winter Olympic performance by any country in terms of gold medals, winning No. 14 in a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the United States on Sunday.

Sidney Crosby scored through Ryan Miller's legs 7:40 into OT to decide the last medal of the Vancouver Olympics and send millions of Canadians into ecstasy.

It was a remarkable comeback for Canada after a deflating tying goal by U.S. winger Zach Parise, who sent the game into overtime when he stuffed in a rebound from in close off a Patrick Kane shot with 24.4 seconds left.

"The crowd was awesome, the whole country was watching," Canadian winger Rick Nash said after the game. "It was unbelievable."

The game was a battle between goalies Miller and Canada's Roberto Luongo, the Vancouver Canucks netminder who took over from 37-year-old Martin Brodeur a week agp.

The 14th gold broke the record Canada shared with the Soviet Union (1976) and Norway (2002) for most top-podium finishes at a Winter Games.

Canada's seven silver and five bronze gave the country a total of 26, beating by two its previous Winter Games record set in Turin in 2006.

The 26 medals left Canada in third place overall behind the United States and Germany.

While the Canadian men's hockey team was a major story at the Games, an athlete who became the sentimental favourite of millions of Canadians was chosen to carry the host country's flag into Sunday night's closing ceremonies.

Figure skater Joannie Rochette won a bronze medal less than a week after her mom Therese died of a heart attack hours after flying to Vancouver for the Games. Canadian chef de mission Nathalie Lambert said Rochette was selected for her grace and courage under pressure.

"Yes, it's been a tough week for me," said Rochette, a 24-year-old native of Ile-Dupas, Que. "But I want to walk into that stadium as a celebration . . . and a big smile on my face. I want to celebrate with my teammates."

The only other medal event taking place Sunday, the men's 50-kilometre classic cross-country ski race, was a story in Canada more for who didn't race.

Brian McKeever, who is partially blind, had been billed as the first winter athlete to compete in both the Olympics and the Paralympics.

But the 30-year-old from Calgary learned on Friday that wouldn't be the case after all, because he wasn't one of the Canadian team's four fastest skiers.

McKeever said he was saddened by the choice, but understood the logic, based on the fact the four men chosen ahead of him had already delivered good results.

Devon Kershaw of Sudbury, Ont., just missed the podium in the race, finishing fifth.

I just got back from what I thought would be a quick trip to Blockbuster. Those crazy Canadians had an impromptu tailgate party up and down Yonge Street for at least a mile. Half-naked boys running through the streets, girls hanging out of car windows, strangers hugging amd kissing, huge Canadian flags waving, cars honking... it was like a northern Mardi Gras! A few people spotted my Ohio license plate and poked fun at me, but everyone was pretty cool. It was nice to see them having such a great time.

I kept forgetting about the games, and now it's all over. I only watched one event and that was early on when they were doing speed skating. I had no clue Apolo had won 2 more medals. Why are these medals so big this time? That makes them look kinda like cheap costume jewelry.

Obama owes Harper a few brews after Canada takes U.S. in Olympic hockey

at 20:05 on February 28, 2010, EDT.
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

President Barack Obama returns to the White House from the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., following a medical exam Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in Washington. The 48-year-old commander-in-chief signaled a thumbs-up when asked about his health. (THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/J. Scott Applewhite)

VANCOUVER, B.C. - It seems U.S. President Barack Obama owes Prime Minister Stephen Harper a few cold ones.

The two leaders had a friendly bet on the outcome of Sunday's gold-medal Olympic hockey game.

Team Canada came out on top, so Obama will have to pick up a 24-pack of Molson Canadian for the prime minister. Harper would have had to buy Obama a case of Yuengling beer if the U.S. had taken the top honour at the tournament.

Team USA beat Team Canada in the first match-up between the two countries in the preliminary rounds, but Canada came out on top in a heart-stopping overtime round on Sunday.

Harper was at the game in Vancouver but Obama did not make an appearance at the Olympics.

The prime minister met with the gold medal winners in the locker room after the game to congratulate them.

BTW, Americans do love Nickelback. They're just too embarrassed to admit it in public.

While I was rooting big time for USA, Canada does have 4 San Jose Sharks on the team (Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Dany Heatley and Dan Boyle) so Congratulations Team Canada!

Now those four need to go back to the Sharks and lead them to a Stanley Cup win!
