TP - Let's settle this SHIT ONCE AND FOR ALL!!! ! ! OK, yall, it's time to seperate the men from the boys, the women from the girls.
WHAT KIND OF TOILET PAPER DO YOU PREFER?!?!?!?!?! Quilted or non-quilted???? On the one hand non-quilted is thicker and supposedly more absorbant, but on the other, quilted toilet paper tends to be coated and durable, not breaking into pieces and sticking to the outer rim of your stink-box like little bleached dingle-berries. I simply adore quilted toilet paper, except unless it comes from China, because it's been found that up to 27% of toilet paper produced in China was found to have traces of the same bacteria and contaminates in fecal matter. Now, I know some of you are not too picky about what goes up into your stink-box area---hell some of you probably will let anything up in that area.... but certain a good number of you has a preference. So what will it be? quilted? or non-quilted? Or do some of you not care? Maybe yall will go for what I like to call "John Wayne Toilet Paper"---cause it's rough and it's tough, and it don't take shit offa nobody. [Edited 2/11/10 3:41am]

Ex-Moderator | I don’t know why anyone would use the cheap, non-quilted stuff. I just can’t fathom it. I’m almost just prissy enough to carry my own around with me cause I hate the stuff in public bathrooms. (I HATE public bathrooms anyway, the cheap TP just adds to that.) |

Just you wait for Thailand. Public toilets are like butthole concentration camps if you don't bring your own TP.

The Siam Paragon one isn't bad though. It has jasmine scented air spray and poppy club music pumped through little speakers in the bathroom. All the toilets are american style and tissues are available in each stall to wipe with. And that's the men's public toilet. But there have been times that I stepped into a public toilet and turned away because I was certain I would just end up with some kind of disease if I used the facilities.

I thought mine had been sufficiently toughened up this summer, but I got a minor case of food poisoning on Thursday (I was sick all day). lawd, eating should NOT be so adventurous.

as long as it isnt one-ply or makes me feel like I'm wiping my ass with a fresh cut pine tree, I have no preference...

It doesn't matter as long as the toilet paper hangs over the top and in front.
People who install their toilet paper so that it hangs out the back are WEIRD.

Maybe 3 or 4 months to get used to most stuff, but you're never going to be invincible here. I never seem to get really sick these days, but I probably get a bit of an upset stomach a few times a month. Just certain things seem to get me, like spring rolls or those sour sausages at the markets (that I love! ). The cigarettes and alcohol probably don't help me in that sense but really I don't get badly sick anymore here from the food I regularly eat (which actually amounts to only maybe 20 or 30 different meals/snacks). So I have to find one toilet in all of Bangkok if I need to go? Incidentally - I was looking for furnished apartments online yesterday. I found lots in my price range, but it appears what I was finding were places you have to rent for 6-12 month contracts. Do you know how I can search for places I can rent for just the 1 month? |

I'll ask the secretary and see if she knows. The Uni here rents out dorms and 'hotel rooms' too for like $150-200 us dollars a month on a month-by-month basis. There's a decent looking place called Vegas Hotel or something like that that is right beside a soon-to-be opened BTS station that I think is renting for 4400 THB for month (about $150 us dollars). I'll check into it. I'm assuming Aksel will be back in Thailand someway and somehow then too, so you may want to plan a hop to Ko Phangan.

Yeah, I will definitely do some moving about, but if I’m gonna be there 4 weeks I LOVE the idea of having a “home base” so if I’m going away for a couple of days here or there I don’t have to pack up and bring EVERYTHING with me. (I found a yoga retreat place on an island I want to do for a few days too. 3-4 days of yoga classes, spa visits and yummy vegetarian food sounds like heaven and I can’t freaking wait! I also found an English speaking vegetarian cooking school in Bangkok, so I’m gonna take a few day classes there.) I’ve been trying to mentally prepare myself for packing light, but no matter how hard I try I always have too much stuff. And 4 weeks is a long time to be traveling. And clearly I need to pack some quality TP. (See how I brought it back on topic?) |

You're problem with getting around bangkok is not going to be distances, but it will be time. Traffic stands still here. I mean like ALL THE TIME. I actually found a river boat route that takes me into Siam Paragon in 15 minutes. I have to walk almost 2 kilos to get to it, but it's worth it not to sit through traffic. My campus is only 6 kilometers from the nearest BTS station, and sometimes that 6 kilos can take 40 minutes. AMAZINGLY SLOW. By August a new BTS will be about 1 kilo away but it won't solve the cities congestion. At least while you walk the crowded streets there will be tons of street vendors offering stir fried cockroaches for your snacking pleasure.

It looks scary and space alien looking. The dark brown I can handle if there aren't all those freaky, fake looking details in the iris (or is it pupil?) that look so obviously unreal. The blue, green, grey-ish ones all look absurd. It's funny, Mon actually had some contacts in today. They were given to her by Ta's husband, who's an optician. I honestly don't see the point and won't be sad when she's finished using the pack. I think the skin-whitening thing bothers me more, but the eyes are just another part of the same issue. For a full Thai who isn't 'blessed' with having as much to work with as a 'luuk-khreung' I think they figure the next best thing is achieved by looking as Japanese or Korean as possible. Next best thing to being white. MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!
