Jess is like 100 lbs soaking wet - tiny and beautiful ... someone hug me teach her to use her kinetic energy to turn that 100 into something far greater! I'm trying to teach my girls how to "BE Aware" because I just see too many young ones who are oblivious to their surroundings... Preparation is key... She has had life long lessons and experience - being a bellydancer from age 5ish - she was exposed to situations that led us to be able to teach her some important things ... both positive and negitive things which was great girl could chop your head off with her sword but those arnt allowed to be carried round on a campus

[Edited 2/11/10 9:46am] In all seriousness, learning to run really did help my confidence in that sense. I’m not super fast, but chances are good I can run away from an attacker. And most bad guys aren’t gonna be able to keep up with me for 10 miles. |

Yeah,
Even if they will not really learn enough to really fight off a determined attacker, most attackers are cowards that expect no resistance so even a small amount of fight will help. Of course the best defence is awareness and running shoes. Also knowing how to get attention and how not too. Yelling 'RAPE' or 'HELP' might get ignored, yell 'FIRE' and people will react as long as you are in between the people and the exit. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Even a mile or hell a 100 yards into a populated area. Also tell her to KNOW where the call boxes are and what building are open late (like computer labs) you always want to go toward people. Definitely yes. Honestly, a good boxing or Muay Thai Kickboxing class would be more beneficial compared to your run of the mill self-defense class. In many self defense classes, the techniques that are used are way too complicated to remember in a survival situation--without lots of practice. I am not sure if your daughter can carry mace/pepper spray on campus, but that's an option. [Edited 2/11/10 10:08am]

(in training) but it can be dangerous as that little spring is strong and can fling little bits of metal pretty hard, and the pinch factor! OUCH! "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I'm thinking of taking one myself, even though [knock on wood] I've never been attacked in 37 years.
I took some kickboxing, just the exercise type, and it made me feel more confident, but perhaps because I'm a dumb guy, more aggressive, too. Sometimes I wonder if learning to fight is like having a gun around the house--you're more likely to use it? But that's from a guy's perspective. I think every girl should learn it because I actually know several women that have had self defense and who have fought off attackers. My Legacy
