Wife Accuses Ex-Champ Holyfield of Abuse

February 11, 2010

Candi Holyfield, the wife of former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, has filed for a temporary protective order against her husband and accused him of domestic violence.

The court case that Candi brought against Evander is listed as "family violence ... protective order," and court documents allege that Evander choked, hit and threw a bottle of water at Candi.

The full order of protection, which has been posted at Radar Online, portrays Evander as an abusive man who questioned Candi's loyalty to him and to their church.

"He told me that I was only thinking about myself," Candi Holyfield stated. "He started telling me that I needed to start putting God first in my life."

Although Holyfield has been known as one of the sport's gentlemen for his demeanor both in and out of the ring, his personal life has drawn increased scrutiny in recent years. It has been reported that Holyfield has at least 11 children by at least eight different women, that he has serious financial problems despite making more than $200 million in his career, and that he was involved with a pharmacy that illegally distributed steroids to athletes.

The peak of Holyfield's boxing career came in 1996 and 1997, when he beat Mike Tyson in back-to-back fights. Although the New York State Athletic Commission refused to license him after his skills began to diminish, he has continued to fight into his mid-40s despite concerns about his physical and mental health.
