There's a decent looking place called Vegas Hotel or something like that that is right beside a soon-to-be opened BTS station that I think is renting for 4400 THB for month (about $150 us dollars). I'll check into it. I'm assuming Aksel will be back in Thailand someway and somehow then too, so you may want to plan a hop to Ko Phangan. Thanks!! Yeah, I will definitely do some moving about, but if I’m gonna be there 4 weeks I LOVE the idea of having a “home base” so if I’m going away for a couple of days here or there I don’t have to pack up and bring EVERYTHING with me. (I found a yoga retreat place on an island I want to do for a few days too. 3-4 days of yoga classes, spa visits and yummy vegetarian food sounds like heaven and I can’t freaking wait! I also found an English speaking vegetarian cooking school in Bangkok, so I’m gonna take a few day classes there.) I’ve been trying to mentally prepare myself for packing light, but no matter how hard I try I always have too much stuff. And 4 weeks is a long time to be traveling. And clearly I need to pack some quality TP. (See how I brought it back on topic?) Sounds awesome. Not sure when I'll have time but there's a retreat in Chachoengsao I want to do. You're problem with getting around bangkok is not going to be distances, but it will be time. Traffic stands still here. I mean like ALL THE TIME. I actually found a river boat route that takes me into Siam Paragon in 15 minutes. I have to walk almost 2 kilos to get to it, but it's worth it not to sit through traffic. My campus is only 6 kilometers from the nearest BTS station, and sometimes that 6 kilos can take 40 minutes. AMAZINGLY SLOW. By August a new BTS will be about 1 kilo away but it won't solve the cities congestion. At least while you walk the crowded streets there will be tons of street vendors offering stir fried cockroaches for your snacking pleasure. Depends on time of day though. When I get a taxi from all the way out here to Suvarnabhumi in the early morning it only takes me 25 minutes and costs no more than 300 baht! I've had nightmare experiences trying to even GET a taxi to take me back here from Pantip Plaza though, and once finally in a taxi I've sometimes been stuck for 2 hours in traffic, not just in the centre of the city either but after Rama VIII bridge as you get to Pinklao. We've gotten out of the taxi right before Pinklao bridge going towards Khao San too, even though we were only maybe 800 metres away, and taken the boat across instead. The BTS is coming along out here (can see it from our balcony, just about 80 metres away ) but I believe it's only going from here to near Chatuchak, not into the heart of town. But even if you make it on a roundabout from there to chutuchak back down to Silom/Siam, that's still often quicker than a taxi or bus. The BTS is remarkably fast and efficient, and though sometimes crowded, nothing like what you'd find in London or New York. Plus, I had a cute young Thai guy touch my crotch, I think deliberately on the BTS. I mean, you can't get that shit from a tour guide!

There are some other routes from Talingchan in the works according to the page on wikipedia, but those could take a while. It really is quite a pleasant experience most of the time, you're right, unless extremely crowded, but you seem to have found an upside to that. Just saw this on wiki: The SRT Red Lines is a planned elevated metro system in Bangkok, Thailand. The lines will be operated by the State Railway of Thailand or SRT. There are two lines planned, the first one from Bangsue to Rangsit and a second one from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Taling Chan. Transportation Minister to test Airport Link Skytrain before opening in August
The Transportation Minister has prepared to test the Airport Link Skytrain prior to its opening in August while its construction has so far reached 90 percent completion. Director-General of the Department of Highways Suphot Suplom, as an executive of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), announced that the construction on the Airport Link Skytrain has been completed up to 90 percent and that the service would be fully opened on August 12, 2009. - ThaiNews / 2009-02-12 I mean, it basically follows the route of the old line that was aborted in 1997. All this, let's not forget, for an airport built on a swamp that took over 30 years to complete. . We just want a Talingchan to Bangsue one because then we can get to all those main lines in the city from here. It continues southwest along Ram Khamhaeng Road, passing Hua Mak Stadium and Ramkhamhaeng University. Then it turns to the west and crosses Praditmanutham Road to the current MRT depot. Then it goes to the Thailand Cultural Centre station, the alignment crosses over and transfers to the current Bangkok Metro Blue Line. It continues via Din Daeng housing estates and Bangkok City Hall 2 to Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Sam Liam Din Daeng Junction. Then turn left into Ratchaprarop Road towards Pratunam and turn right into Petchaburi Road then interchange with BTS Sukhumvit Line at Ratchathewi Station. It continues along Lan Luang Road and Ratchadamnern Road. Then cross Chaophraya River near Prapinklao Bridge, pass Siriraj Hospital and go along Bangkok Noi Rail line and terminate at Taling Chan, interchange with SRT Light Red Line. Should I bring my own scooter? No, it's not. Just don't get caught in rush hour in the morning and early evening, strategically use the BTS, and try to have a general idea of where you're going so as not to be taken round the houses. Also, in some places taxi drivers may try to get you to go off-meter. Tell them you don't play that shit. Takes me little more than 30 minutes to get into town (say, Sukhumwit) from here in a taxi most times of day. Buses take a fair bit longer (1hr - 1hr 30 mins) with all the stopping, but are a lot cheaper. If I'm not alone in the taxi I usually just take a nap. Which is why I have no idea of Bangkok's geography. MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!
