Pregnancy question A friend of mine is 8 months pregnant, and today she was rushed to the hospital. they're going to operate, so I guess he's going to be born prematurely.
Does he have more chances of survival if he's big? (more than 6.5 lbs already)

Same thing happened to my wife With our first kid who was 5 weeks early. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I've known babies who were 25 weeks gestation survive, and they (twins) are now 3 years old! They were 1 lb each.
So I expect this baby will do just fine.

whiew...good to hear that.
The father was born 11.4 lbs, so this baby is begger for his age. I don't know if the size would help or not. Glad to hear the danger is not as big as I imagined.

snicker Why I oughtta...! Actually when I was born I wasn't producing white blood cells so I spent months in an incubator. And had blood transfusions and stuff. I was so small that my entire body fit in the palm of the doctor's hand, apparently. And I'm here alive Kids are robust, versatile things!

my son was born 7 1/2 weeks premature...at 6 lbs 6 3/4 ozs
we were in the hospital for 11 days because of jaundice, heart murmur and umbilical hernia. otherwise he was healthy...i thank god everyday he was early because the doctors told me if he had have been full term he probably would have been around the 11 lb mark (can u say HOLY SHIT!!!) from my past history and that of my friends and the other babies in the Nic U, anything over 4 lbs should be fine... don't worry... you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel

I think the baby will be okay...
Both of my children were premature. My son was born nearly two months early and weighed 5 pounds. He had to stay in the hospital for a week due to under-developed lungs. My daughter was a little over a month premature and weighed 6 pounds and she was able to come home the next day. Best wishes to your your friend and her baby.

I wouldn't worry either. My son was born yesterday (3 and 1/2 weeks) early and weighed 7 lbs 12 oz and he seems to be doing fine. My wife had pre-eclampsia and the baby had to be taken due to her blood pressure. I don't know if blood pressure is a factor, but the docs told us that high blood pressure causes the baby's lungs to develop faster so they should have absolutely no problems if taken during the 7th month of pregnancy.

He's my namesake, a junior. I really HATED to punish him with my first name so to prevent confusion among my family we are going to call him by my middle name: Carter. [This message was edited Thu Jan 16 17:17:23 PST 2003 by chickengrease]

GOD yes. I came home for a couple of hours to take a breather. Since my wife had a C-section I've been changing more diapers and pads than I had planned to in 24 hours

Does he have more chances of survival if he's big? (more than 6.5 lbs already) 37 weeks gestation is considered full term. Baby will be fine. [This message was edited Thu Jan 16 17:29:21 PST 2003 by Funksha] "Choochie, choocie, choo", Mommy said to the little baby.

My son was born 3 1/2 wks early. He weighed 3 lbs 11 ozs. He had to stay in the hospital for 3 wks before I could bring him home at 4 lbs but, he was perfectly healthy. I had developed pre-eclampsia and toxemia in the later stages of my pregnancy and the doctors did not catch it because none of my symptoms were happening at the same time. Emergency C-Section it was for me. My ambilical cord had almost totally fallen apart. Another week and he would not have made it.
Four years later my daughter was born weighing in at 4 lbs 10 ozs. I developed pre-eclampsia and toxemia again along with gestational diabeties, but she was only 5 days early and she too was perfectly healthy. Did have another C-Section again, but I was able to have a spinal tap so I could be awake when she was born. Tubes were tied after that one. The Lord blessed me with two beautiful, healthy children and I thank him every day for giving them to me. I'm sure your friend with be fine and congratulations on the new arrival.

OK. Just got a call from my mom.
The problem was that the baby had a hole in his stomach and his guts spilled out So they wanted her to give birth ASAP. So the baby is out, and went through surgery and is still recovering. We'll know more in a day or two.

That's good to hear. hope both the mom and the baby will be fine  _______________________________
Miss Cute For whatever it's worth, I'm sorry.

Guts spilled out!!! That is a gross way to phrase it. All babies develop their intestines outside of the body. Then at 10 to 16 weeks they re-enter the babies abdomen. Occasionally there could be complications that arise which don't permit the intestines to return I am guessing that this could have happened here. As soon as it is safe for mother and baby they would have performed a C-section for optimal survival of mother and child. Sounds like they are in good hands, all should be fine.

Heavenly - do not worry I'm sure the baby will be fine. My uncle was born 7 weeks premature and he weighed only 2 1/2 lbs when he was born and he lived a long life.
