At a fine-dining restaurant, the average cost of food is 38% to 42% of the menu price, says Kevin Moll, the CEO and president of National Food Service Advisors. In other words, most restaurants are making roughly 60% on anything they serve.

If your grocery store or dry cleaner was making 60% on you, you would stop patronizing them. Yet, at your favorite restaurant, you pay that margin and then some with a tip added to the bill.

Tipping is for suckers.

So...you stiff your waiter because the owner of the business may or may not be cutting corners? Do you think a restaurant owner that does that is going to pass his savings on to his staff?

Ah shit here we go. None of that shit has anything to do with helping out the person who served you, the WAITER/WAITRESS! They're just doing their job. And just because a restaurant is asking you to pay more than you think it's worth doesn't mean they are paying the waiters more money. Some waiters/waitresses don't even make minimum wage and so much of their money is taxed that they DEPEND on those tips to LIVE.

What a ridiculous reason not to tip. rolleyes

THe owner is stiffing the waiter if he is getting 60% markup and paying the help less tha min wage. It is not my job to compensate the owener's employees.

I am not out to help the person that served me, Sha-ne-ne. You cant give me a good reason that compensation level of an employee who doesnt work for me is my responsibility or conern. Why dont you tip people who serve youat McDonalds or Subway?

And the person who would resort to doing something to my food - or anyone else's food - is worthy of a tip?

Report your tips to the IRS. Waiters cheat the govt every single day but I am the villian because I refuse to subsidize it

the op doesn't tip because he's miserable

there is nothing funnier than tight people pretending they have a moral justification for their thrifty nature, rather than just saying I am a skinflint.

Just embrace the fact and keep filling your pockets with condiments

ok - and you just keep tipping them for me. I have moral and financial justifications that keep my pockets fat and let me sleep well at night. I offered some research which most of the people here didnt read - they simply attack me and my position. Thats ok

Learned that when I earned my MBA. Which is why I know the markup at restaurants is ridiculous comparted to other busineses. At some point, a consumer becomes a sucker when the profit margin is ridiculous. Grocery stores have single digit margins because food is still so inexpensive in the US compared to the rest of the world. You know how much a loaf of bread would be if they charged 60% margins?
