At a fine-dining restaurant, the average cost of food is 38% to 42% of the menu price, says Kevin Moll, the CEO and president of National Food Service Advisors. In other words, most restaurants are making roughly 60% on anything they serve.

If your grocery store or dry cleaner was making 60% on you, you would stop patronizing them. Yet, at your favorite restaurant, you pay that margin and then some with a tip added to the bill.

Tipping is for suckers.

So...you stiff your waiter because the owner of the business may or may not be cutting corners? Do you think a restaurant owner that does that is going to pass his savings on to his staff?

At some point, a consumer becomes a sucker when the profit margin is ridiculous. Grocery stores have single digit margins because food is still so inexpensive in the US compared to the rest of the world. You know how much a loaf of bread would be if they charged 60% margins?
