Vitamins. Do you take them?

I've never been one to take vitamins until lately. The last time I can remember taking vitamins was when I was around 7, taking the Flintstones ones. Now, I take Vitamin C, E, B12, and Cranberry pills enhanced w/ Vitamin C. Are multi-vitamins just as potent as individual ones?

I take Boots multi-vitamins with iron plus a couple of calcium with vitamin D tabs. I occasionally take spirulina and wheatgrass tabs too but they're really the wife's. They're just there for a top-up. We usually do get quite a lot of veggies and fruit in our diet so something I like about the Boots tabs is that they're always sensible in their dosage unlike some brands, like Blackmores for example.

I take a multi vitamin when I remember. I was just researching Vit D last night.
I have been really struggling this winter with the lack of sunlight.
I came across this product:

Solgar Mood Box

* Product code: SOLGAR/E4215
* Size: 1 Box
* Price: £25.00

Product Description:
Solgar Sunshine Box

Solgar has brought together their best selling feel-good essentials: 5-HTP 30’s, Rhodiola 30’s and vitamin D3 90’s.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid, a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and an intermediate in tryptophan metabolism. It is has been traditionally used as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid.

Rhodiola rosea may have beneficial effects in managing mild to moderate depression and mental fatigue.

Vitamin D3 is a g fat-soluble molecule which is also known as cholecalciferol. Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements, is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylation reactions to be activated in the body.

To brighten up your day, Solgar’s Sunshine in a box also includes the newly published book The Vitamin D Cure by James E. Dowd, MD and Diane Stafford. This complimentary book (worth £9.99) tells you all you need to know about this year’s most talked about health supplement.

Purchase Solgar Sunshine in a box kit £25.00

This box contains supplements which may also help you regain that feel-good factor. Also included is the newly published The Vitamin D Cure book by James E. Dowd, MD and Diane Stafford.

The Vitamin D Cure

In The Vitamin D Cure, leading rheumatologist and researcher Dr. James Dowd reveals the causes of vitamin D deficiency and offers a simple, easy-to-follow five-step program. You`ll find out how much vitamin D you need and how to sun and supplement your way to the right D levels``

James E. Dowd, MD., F.A.C.R., is Associate Professor of Medicine at Michigan State University and the founder and director of both the Arthritis Institute of Michigan and the Michigan Arthritis Research Center.

Sometimes simple changes to your lifestyle can make a huge difference to how you feel. Eating the right foods is a step in the right direction to achieving that feel-good factor. Maintain a balanced healthy diet, which includes protein, complex carbohydrates, oily fish, nuts, fruit and vegetables.

If it was not so expensive, I would try it.
I wonder if it would help me feel better.

That's the problem most of the time. These products can cost so much! At least we now know we can get goji berries from Chinatown for peanuts (to eat with yoghurt or in cereal smile ), but honestly I just can't justify spending the money it would take for Mon and I to both take spirulina and wheatgrass tabs everyday (that we usually order from a company in the UK, except spirulina is sometimes on special here at Boots smile ). So, we just buy them for Mon for now and I have to miss out. lol

I´ve heard that Solgar is one of the best brands out there.I don´t really take vitamin tablets the way I used to when I was younger but Solgar is supposed to be very good.

I make sure I drink at least one protein shake a day, and my protein is already enriched with dozens of vitamins and trace minerals, so I don´t want to overdo it. Zinc is also something I take regularly, at least 10 mg a day, if not more.

I used to take vitamins and trace minerals and minerals like crazy but now that I´ve done some research on them I take much less and better quality.

I'm one of those that can't handle swallowing big horse pills, so I take an adult chewable multi.

May I ask how much you take each day? My bottle says 1-3 softgels a day, but right now I'm only taking one a day and I'm probably going to bump that up to two per day but I'm not sure...

I have a book by David Servan Schreiber, a French guy (psychiatrist?) who used to work and teach in the USA and he also highly recommends omega 3 supplements to boost your mood.Very good book.

A lot of vitamin and mineral tablets in the USA are way too big and contain a lot of unnecessary fillers or binding agents, and some of those fillers actually prevent the proper absorption of the vitamin or mineral they are supposed to carry.
http://www.do-dietary-sup...solid.html

http://www.nutritional-su...inder.html

I used to buy tons of that stuff everytime I´d visit the USA because most of the stuff there contains much higher amounts of vitamins or minerals than the stuff they sell here or in England but now I know that the dosage means nothing if the body can´t absorb the main ingredient properly.It´s like eating chalk.
Now I look twice when I buy that stuff. And even here you have to read the labels thoroughly to get what you want.

I find this part interesting:

Many herbs, and other ingredients, clump together and don’t mix well unless excipients are added.

So, although excipients don’t contribute significant health benefits their inclusion is essential.

Tablet form is best – that’s why most expensive drugs are produced this way – however very few supplement companies have mastered the correct manufacturing protocols for pharmaceutical grade tablet making. Supplement companies not using tablets will all tell you that capsules or liquid form are best.

Like all ingredients there are good excipients and there are cheap ones. The cheap ones adversely affect the bioavailability of a nutritional supplement because they don’t easily disintegrate. Others commonly cause stomach upsets, sensitivity or allergic reactions.

Have you ever known anyone who developed an adverse reaction to a supplement? I’ve known many.

If we had fresh food and ate well, most people would not need any vitamin supps.
But we don't and we don't so supplementing your diet with vitamins is importatnt, especially if you endure a lot of physical/emotional stress.
Those things along with environmental pollution rob us of important minerals.
Cheaper in the long run to pop a few multis and an herbal capsule then to be forced on these expensive ass meds doctors want us to take. sad

just be choosy which vitamins you take . read up on all of them. whole food organic vitamins are best. most others dont have any benefit because your body cannot assimilate them. especially multi vitamins.
