the only one that comes to mind is Alicia Keys...she really needs to get over herself... what... blogging as a form of self expression..in all its forms...this should include twitter and constant, minute by minute facebook status updates...it's cool to express yourself and let folks know what's going on on your life...but for the most part, nobody gives a fuck... Ditto Jill Scott. Jill Scott: Just Some Fucking OK Sounding RnB Tracks, Nothing 'Important' or Deep Vol. 1 Maybe her work doesn't resonate with you as it does for many of us. Some of us identify readily and clearly with what she has to say and thus her work has a feeling of importance for us....and she doesn't come off as self important at all if you actually have a chance to talk to her or spend time with her. She's actually earthy and extraordinarily soft-spoken once she's off stage... Just sayin'

Just doesn't really do it for me and comes across with a pretentious air, but if she's down to earth in real life that's very cool. I actually have her first album and I like it quite a bit, so it's not like I'm just into bashing her. I just find her a bit... much. The lyrics do smack of teenage poetry to me, even in the songs I like. MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

The lyrics do smack of teenage poetry to me, even in the songs I like. I felt that way about her 2nd album, but then I felt like she came back strong with Vol. 3... The thing is, she sings about love & relationships in a way that is not some overly sex-charged mess that just seems nasty, like she's an acrobat or pole-dancer. A lot of the music on the radio is just to me, and if I do like a song, I get tired of it after a while. I can play Jill over and over because I can relate on some level. -Gettin' in the Way: been there. -The Fact Is (I need you): real. -Epiphany: damn. -Hate on Me: anthem. The only song I can say I truly hate is "Family Reunion". But those pix were funny! "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

She's not without substance, has a decent voice and is obviously not some brain-dead bimbo. It's all in jest really since as I said, I do quite like her first album. It's just the lyrics really. I think I'm going to check out Vol. 3 as several ppl here seem to rave about it. I used to jump up and down on my bed listening to 'It's Love' when I came back to the UK for the first time after hooking up with my now wife. . I like her, but still... Oh, I actually have Jill Scott's first album, I should add " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I've noticed that people who use the word pretentious are usually the most pretentious people ever. They're being pretentious in an attempt to avoid appearing pretentious.
The word pretentious is dead. People have killed the word by applying it to everything that aspires to an ounce of dignity or intellectual acumen - it's a shield we wield against fear of our own stupidity. Let's discard the battered signifier, shall we? Let's throw down the chains of anti-intellectual panic and just aspire to be whatever we wish and let others do the same. Let us be free, my sisters and brothers, free to be whomever we want without fear of labels! Let's rise above it all! LET'S FUCK SHIT UP!!!!! [Edited 2/8/10 6:19am]

I find poetry slam contestants to be extremely pretentious.
I admire poetry and performance (I play in a band myself) but it always seems to be this egotistical pseudo hip hop stoner thing like "I exhale as the freedom flows from my lips in unbroken bars of creative manifestation..." Hey that's pretty good!! My Legacy

So many indie filmmakers I meet are pretentious, blindly copying the stylistics or philosophy of this or that hipster favored filmmaker.... masking their own inadequate artistic identity...

I can't stand when women come to the nail salon and conduct business via cellphone- loudly!
There is this one heifer who must work in the entertainment industry, because she makes calls and name-drops the entire time, while making eye-contact in the mirrors to see our reaction. "Love Hurts.
