Canada's NDP Leader Jack Layton Announces in Statement FEB 5. He Has Prostate Cancer 
Good afternoon. Thank you all for coming.
As some of you may know, I hurt my back last week. Everyone who leads an active lifestyle knows what it's like to pull a muscle at the gym - it can be pretty painful. My back is better now, but today I want to let you know about an unrelated health matter. This year, more than 25,000 Canadian men will be diagnosed with treatable prostate cancer and I have recently learned that I’m one of them. It’s the same kind of prostate cancer that my father was diagnosed with 17 years ago. He, like the overwhelming majority of Canadian men with prostate cancer, fought it and won. His treatments were successful, and I intend to tackle this with the same determination that he did. Like my dad, I am a fighter. And I will beat this. My treatment plan is now underway and everything is on track. In the coming weeks, the schedule of my treatment regime means I may have a bit more time to catch the Olympics. The hard work and drive of our Canadian athletes will be an inspiration. I want to assure my constituents and the Canadian public that this will in not impede my ability to serve as either the Member of Parliament for Toronto Danforth or as leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada. I have an amazing team, great friends and a loving, supportive family. And my wife Olivia knows a thing or two about taking on cancer, having been diagnosed with thyroid cancer just a few years ago. She won her battle and so will I. Recently, the Party marked the 7th anniversary of my becoming leader. Without question we have accomplished much. But we also recognize there is a lot more to do to build a more caring and greener Canada. And I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves Monday morning and get back at it. I just read that one of Canada's top policticians is being treated in the US for a heart condition, or something major.

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland -- The premier of Canada's east coast province is undergoing heart surgery in the United States this week because the treatment he is seeking was not available in his home province. The announcement about of Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams' plans has triggered a debate since Canada prides itself on its universal health care system. Kathy Dunderdale, the province's deputy premier who is taking over in his absence, said Tuesday that Williams decided to go to the U.S. for surgery after weeks of consultation with his doctors. She did not say where in the U.S. he would seek care. Dunderdale says having the surgery done in the province was never an option. But she wouldn't comment on whether the type of surgery Williams was having was available elsewhere in Canada. In Newfoundland, opposition Liberal Leader Yvonne Jones offered Williams her wishes for his full recovery. But she said he owes the public more of an explanation about exactly what procedure he needs and why he felt it necessary to go to the U.S. Williams, 60, is an independently wealthy former lawyer and businessman who donates his premier's salary to charity. He will take from three to 12 weeks to recover and will speak publicly about his condition once he is well enough to do so, Dunderdale said. "Ultimately we have to be the gatekeepers of our own health," Dunderdale said. and uhm.. I'd still rather have the health care I do here in Canada than what you have down there... 12/05/2011

and uhm.. I'd still rather have the health care I do here in Canada than what you have down there... Let's keep the discussion about prostate cancer, which it's supposed to be about, coz this thread looks borderline P&R fodder.

Prostate cancer most common male cancer, generally highly treatable
at 16:12 on February 5, 2010, EDT. By THE CANADIAN PRESS NDP Leader Jack Layton announced Friday he has joined the tens of thousands of Canadian men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some facts about prostate cancer: What is it? - A cancer that grows in the prostate, a walnut-sized gland that is located at the base of the penis, surrounding the urethra. The prostate makes seminal fluid, which mixes with sperm to make semen. How common is it? - The most common cancer diagnosed in this country. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates one in every seven men will be diagnosed with it and 25,500 men were diagnosed with it last year alone in this country. Does it run in families? - Yes, men with relatives who have had prostate cancer are at higher risk of developing it too. Jack Layton's late father, Bob, also battled prostate cancer. What is the prognosis? - The details of Layton's particular case aren't known, though he expressed optimism. In general, prostate cancer is one of the more treatable cancers. The Cancer Society estimates one in 27 Canadian men will die of it and 4,400 Canadian men died of it last year in Canada. What is the treatment? - In some cases no treatment is recommended. If the cancer does not appear to be growing, doctors may choose to monitor rather than treat. If the cancer grows, doctors may recommend therapy to suppress the hormones fuelling the cancer, radiation or even removal of the prostate. Chemotherapy may be used in later-stage disease. What are the symptoms? - There may be none in the early stages. In more advanced disease, symptoms can include trouble urinating, decreased force in the stream of urine, blood in urine or semen, swelling of the legs, discomfort in the pelvic region and bone pain. Who else has had prostate cancer? - Many high-profile figures have acknowledged being diagnosed with prostate cancer, including Nelson Mandela, former U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry, former federal health minister Allan Rock and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani. ©The Canadian Press, 2010
