Writers of the org. Which do you think is harder to write? a short story or a novel.
Me personally, I think the short story. Because in the novel, characters slowly develop and flourish while in the short story they have to be already developed. One can express themselves more in a novel, but a short story tends to more truthful and creative. I don't know.

true. I can't even work with oils, not for lack of want, but because my head explodes if I can't work over stuff within 10 minutes or less.

[Edited 2/6/10 19:46pm] Yes as in painting. You can achieve many similar effects with acrylics (my main medium). But now they have water soluble oils (if the solvent fumes where a problem for you). It sounds like an oxymoron to me...water soluble oils.

They can totally go hand in hand.

I'm too verbose for a short story, although I could probably do it. However, I'm also more of a Non-Fiction based guy. I read a lot of biographies. I've written plays (five and had two produced), but the first book I wrote, which is about 270 pages, was an autobiography. I wrote it in five weeks flat. May/June 2008. So having said that, for me the "novel" sized piece is easier....so far.
I plan to use one of my plays as a basis for a humorous novel. Once I get the bio proofread and fixed, I'll start on the actual novel. No idea how that is going to turn out, but we'll see. PS this is what I just started reading. [Edited 2/6/10 20:26pm]

It's easier for me to write short stories. I like to get to the point. If you will, so will I

Short stories. My brain just can't understand what "short" means. I've tried so many times to write short stories. They end up being thirty two pages long. I'm just blessed that my professors so far actually like my strong writing. They ask for five pages, I give them 11.
Novels give you the space to stretch out, evolve in due time. Short stories require getting to the point and climaxing as soon as possible. ...man, that sounds dirty. I personally would like to work on that. I wouldn't mind writing short stories for children.

I'm kinda surprised to read a lot of people say they have trouble writing short stories. I've never attempted a novel but I've written plenty short stories. The key to not being too wordy is limiting the number of characters in the story and keeping the timeline of events down to just a day or so.
I think with a short story, action is usually focused on the event or the situation more than the main character(s). Therefore, not a lot of character development is needed. Otherwise, it's probably best expressed in a novel or novella.

..i study quite a bit, so usually i end up writing a lesson, which i guess could be considered in essence a short story. THE B EST BE YOURSELF AS LONG AS YOUR SELF ISNT A DYCK[/r]
