If we purchase a new cd we pay about 20-25 bux.My question is how much of that goes to the artist and how much to the record company?

There are no fixed numbers, but most of it goes to the record company.
Sometimes the Artist gets a fixed ammount that was set in advance, plus royalties. sometimes the artist gets percentage. It all depends on the contract. The more promising you are, the better deal you get as an Artist.
