Failing to include Jurnee is criminal and typical. So, fuck Vanity Fair flip u

Role as feisty debater was a natural

HOLLYWOOD -- In Denzel Washington's new film "The Great Debaters," we are introduced to a young woman who is poised, talented and determined to succeed as a college debater against a field of men, but she knows that to accomplish that goal she will have to overcome not only prejudice based on race, but also based on gender.

Her name is Samantha Booke and in the film, which is set at Wiley College in eastern Texas during the Great Depression, she becomes the first woman selected by coach Melvin B. Tolson to compete on the debate team at the historically black school. It would go on to defeat numerous white teams from larger, more prestigious colleges and universities. The movie is inspired by real-life events.

Jurnee Smollett knew from the moment she read Robert Eisele's script that the role of Samantha Booke embodied all the dramatic elements that young black actresses of this era crave but so seldom get to play on-screen.

"I've gotten so many scripts where if you're not on the sideline cheering your boyfriend on, you're fighting with him about cheating on you, or you're just set dressing," Smollett said, looking down and shaking her head.

"I always told my representatives, Look, I come from the 'School of Janet' -- that's my mom. She raised me to know that I'm more than just set dressing. So, getting a script like this is rare."

Smollett, 21, no longer is standing on the sidelines. Her powerful performance -- especially in one scene where she is at the podium, fire in her eyes, steel in her voice, demanding "Freedom now!" -- makes Booke emerge not only as a top debater among her male peers, but also as a fearless champion for justice during a period of American history when blacks were still being lynched by the side of the road.

Washington, who directed the movie and stars in it too as Professor Tolson, has said that Smollett was the first and only actress to read for the pivotal part.

Smollett has spent a lifetime before the cameras, from the time she was 10 months old appearing in Pampers commercials; to childhood roles in TV sitcoms such as "On Our Own," where she starred with her real-life sister and four brothers; and CBS' "Cosby," or in films such as 1997's "Eve's Bayou." More recently, she appeared in "Gridiron Gang," starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and "Roll Bounce," starring Bow Wow.

Some characters in "The Great Debaters," such as Tolson (Washington), team member James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker) and the boy's father (Forest Whitaker), are based on historical figures. Farmer would go on to become a leading figure in the civil rights movement, co-founding the Congress of Racial Equality. Booke's character was inspired by Henrietta Bell, class of 1934, who was not a member of the award-winning debate team but was its first female member.

Smollett said she had tried to imagine how to play the role, but it wasn't until Washington put her in touch with Bell, now 96, that she found the way. The two women's budding friendship allowed the actress to alter in some ways her interpretation of the character.

"There were a number of things about her I ended up making adjustments for. It was more of a quiet storm type of thing," Smollett said. "From the beginning, I knew she was a girl from an affluent background, or as affluent as you could be back then for a 'colored' girl, (but) I was pleasantly surprised how similar the character I was building was to her."

Smollett credits much of her success to her own mother, Janet, who "had a very socially active life."

"She marched and she did the sit-ins and she did voter organizing," Smollett said. "It built that whole warrior spirit inside of all of us. She told me, 'You've been given this talent for a reason. It's not for you to gloat in the fame, because there are always people around who will pat you on the back, but you have to know at the end of the day, you are to use this talent for a bigger purpose.' "

"The Great Debaters" was shot in small towns near Shreveport. La., and the production also filmed one day in Marshall, Texas, home to Wiley College, and at Harvard University in Massachusetts.

As beautiful as the Shreveport area is, Smollett recalls, she could do without the snakes, which a wrangler would keep away from cast and crew. But what she surely will take away from the experience is working under the tutelage of two-time Oscar-winner Washington.

"There's nothing better than a young actor working with someone who is a master like that," she said. "It is the best experience you can possibly ask for. My whole life, I have looked at films by him. I remember being in the theaters watching 'Malcolm X,' I remember the first time I saw 'Glory' and the first time I saw 'Crimson Tide.' But I believe that as a director he is able to check his ego at the door, and he really collaborated with us. That was what amazed me so much. There were times he asked my opinion about stuff. He didn't have to do that, but it was a team effort."

The director even had the actors attend a two-day "debate camp" at Texas Southern University in Houston, where they trained intensively and then competed against the school's freshman team (the actors' team won).

Although debating was new to Smollett, public speaking was not. Since the age of 12, she has delivered numerous speeches on behalf of Artists for a New South Africa, a nonprofit organization working in the U.S. and South Africa to combat HIV/AIDS. Through the organization, of which she is a board member, she traveled to South Africa and met Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, among others.

But her years of activism couldn't prepare her for one of the film's most harrowing scenes, in which the debaters encounter a crowd of whites lynching a black man. Smollett said it was difficult for the actors to watch, even though it was a re-creation.

"You know what I felt?" Smollett said. "I felt it could be me. If a few of the numbers -- the mathematical equations were changed a little bit -- it could have been me (living back then)."

Earlier this month, while standing in the Miami airport waiting to board a flight, an airline employee told Smollett and one of her co-stars, Nate Parker, that they shouldn't be in the line for first-class passengers.

"The lady stops both of us and says, 'No, no, no, coach is that way,' " Parker recalled. "Jurnee gets beet red and says, 'We are first class, thank you very much.' " Parker said he later wrote a letter of complaint to the airline.

The School of Janet would be proud.

The writers/editors are either totally racist, or, thought like this:

I haven't seen Precious yet, but based on reviews, I can understand Gabby is a good actress. However, does anyone believe she is going to have any future movie roles? She's been seriously typecast, and except for Tyler Perry, I don't see anyone casting her in another lead role unless her appearance changes. And this has nothing to do with her being Black.

Zoe Saldana is not as young as the ones in the photo, so maybe that's why she was exempt.

And, they most likely forgot about the girl from Slumdog Millionaire.

So, besides them, what other "minority" actresses the same age as these women featured are "New Hollywood?" The only one I can think of is Zoe Kravitz, but since her film(s) hasn't been released yet, I guess they weren't aware of her.

Yea she's over weight but she's a Oscar nominated actress and she already has a new film in the can (with Zoe Kravitz)

falloff @ the folks mentioning Gabby.

Now, ya'll already know that hell will freezes over and then melt before they put somebody like her in the cover spread, you guy. know the MO of those magazines.

Another thing, it seems that those type of magazines are ONLY inclined to put a "token black" when they're under pressure from their sponsors or getting sued for being racist, which tells me that they're not intrested in women of color TO BEGIN WITH.

Yeah I should be annoyed for not seeing some color in that wave of paleness, but then again, why the hell should I single out "Vanity Fair" when 1/2 of magazines that are not directed toward people color are guilty of the same thing? Its the same old story.

But to be honest with you, I don't feel too strongly about it.
