Another associate of the ‘Black Pack’, Rock is the most political comic on here. Chris was born in 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. In the 10 grade he dropped out of high school, but would later go back to get his GED. Around this time, he started to perform comedy at clubs around New York, circa 1984. In 1986, he was discovered by Eddie Murphy at one of said clubs, and started running with the ‘Black Pack.’ By the next year, he was performing stand up on HBO’s Uptown Comedy Express produced by Eddie and Beverly Hills Cops II and on NBC’s Miami Vice. His appearance in Wayans’ I’m Gonna Git U Sucka was classic and was on the up and up. By 1990, he found his way onto his former ‘Black Packs’ Murphy and Damon Wayans’ old stompin’ ground Saturday Night Live. This gave him the exposure he needed. He was part of the Bad Boys of SNL, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and David Spade. H was the least used of the bunch and even his friend Shawn Wayans over at In Living Color had to make fun of it (he did again on the MTV Movie Awrads). After his 3 seasons over on NBC, he moved to Fox’s In Living Color. But it was too late, he came at the time the Wayans had left, (he should have came over much earlier.) His first co-starring role was on New Jack City and his first production credit was his film CB4. 1994, he released his first HBO special, Big Ass Jokes. Chris said by 1994, he was a has been already, he wasn’t getting any roles, no TV time, no nothing. He was performing with such acts as Martin Lawrence, Tommy Davidson, Jamie Foxx and Joe Tory and while he was the main attraction, they weren’t stayin’ to see him. He worked on his material for 2 years at comedy clubs and in 1996, “THE” Chris Rock was born. We see this Chris Rock and a February episode of Def Comedy All-Star Jams. By June, HBO gives him another special, Bring The Pain. This changed everything not just for Rock but for comedy in general. It won Emmy’s and spawned a Grammy Award winning album, his second (his first was Born Suspect.) Now movies and TV appearances were coming. In 1998, the Chris Rock Show appeared on HBO and ran for four seasons and won many awards. The next year, he hosted the MTV Movie Awards (and again in 2003), and Bigger and Blacker won him more awards and praise for his comedy. He took a five year break before Never Cared hit in 2004. The next year, he hosted the Emmy Awards and his show about his early life, Everybody Hates Chris was showed for four seasons on the CW. 2008, we saw him tour the world and out of it came Kill The Messenger. It was filmed in The Apollo Theater, Africa and London.

The original dirty comic. This brotha goes so far back, so far back he was friends with Malcolm X before he was Malcolm X. Redd was born in 1922 in St. Luis, Missouri as John Elroy Sanford. His father left him early in hia life and he dropped out of high school after the 9th grade. He went on to play ina washboard band as a drummer and then moved to New York. This is where he met Malcolm. He met him as they were both dishwashers, he was Chicago Red (the funniest dishwasher in town) and Malcolm, Detroit Red. Around this time he started doing comedy. He first teamed up with friend comic Slappy White from 1947 to 1951. His first release was in 1956 for Dooto Records titled “Life if the Party”. Redd was working with the likes of Slappy, Pigmeat Markham and Rudy Ray Moore on the chitlin’ circuit. , until he got his big break. He started to perform in Las Vegas in the 1960s. At this time, besides playing major shows in Vegas and New York he got on TV. He played The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and the Flip Wilson Show. He helped get Flip his nig break in 1965. By the end of the decade he was on TV like Mr. Ed and Green Acres, and he was in movies like Cotton Comes to Harlem. But he’d best be know as junk dealer Fred Sanford on the series Sanford and Son. It ran for 6 seasons. He was one of the big names in Hollywood after that time. He was still releasing records at your time, like the classic “You Gotta Wash Your Ass.” After the series, short lived variety series (The Redd Foxx Show) and sitcoms (Sanford and Sanford Arms) came and went. In 1978, he was the first start to star on HBO’s On Location a stand up series. In the 80’s he starred in Harlem Nights a who’s who of black comedians through the years. Murphy, Richard, Arsenio, Reynaldo Rey, Robin Harris and Charlie Murphy. In 91’ he was back with the Royal Family, but it didn’t last long. Redd is a comic, so when during the break, when the cast saw him holding his chest they assumed he was doin’ his famous Sanford and Son routine, but he did join Elizabeth as he passed away on the set.

Rich was born in Peoria, Illinois in 1940. Richard grew up in a brothal, so he was surrounded by many things at a young age. In his early years, he joined U.S. Army in 1958. His first job in the entertainment industry was working at a bar as a drummer. Pryor started performing stand up in 1963. He was inspired by Bill Cosby and his act was totally different than what he would be known for. He started getting TV appearances like on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan an his first performance in 1964 of the Kraft Music Series. He was a regular on the Vegas strip, around this time things started to change for Richard. The real Rich started coming out and in a performance, just walked of stage. His first album released in 1968, was simply titled Richard Pryor.


Now, it was the 1970, and he was in Berkley hanging out with hippies and the Black Panthers. He signed with Stax Records and was on the film WattsStax and the album That Nigger's Crazy. Now he was big time, appearing on Midnight Special, Flip Wilson Show and writing for Sanford and Son and other series. Now he was with Warner Bros and the album, Is It Something I said dropped. His Saturday Night Live appearance was legendary in it's first season on NBA. NBC liked him so much, they gave him a special, and a short lived series that included Paul Mooney, Tim Reid, John Witherspoon, Robin Williams, Sandra Bernheard and Marsha Warfield. He started to get into movies at this time also. Lady Sings the Blues, The Wiz, The Mac, Stir Crazy and Silver Streak with Gene Wilder.


His stand up was starting to get filmed. First on the WattsStax special in 1973 and then a few years later with Live In Concert in 1978, Live on the Sunset Strip in 82, Here and Now in 83. Live and Smokin' was done in 1971 but released in 1985. In 86, his life story Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling and Richard played himself. He'd do a few more films over the years and stand up and received various awards up until his death shortly after his 65th birthday in 2005. Marlon Wayans is tapped to play Richard in a bio-pic directed by Chris Rock.
