I saw THE SECRET and I believe in all its general principles. It's a little more than positive thinking. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! We want cigar puffing men that look like they wanna beat the living daylights out of us" Val"sporking is spooning with benefits"

I have the book but have never read it. Once someone told me what "the secret" was, I realized I've been saying that and believing it for years.

I am curious about these things, because if they happen to be true I'd hate to miss out just because I am cynical!
But I haven't read it, I assume it's all about the power of positive thinking (Miguel says it's not, but the fact that he mentions is makes me think that's a huge part of it! ) My Legacy

Action causes reaction, butterfly effect, ripple effect etc. Is that roughly it?

I find lots of these type of things have truth in them, the real "secret" is acting on what we know to be true. the secret is that it's no secret The phrase Law of Attraction, used widely by New Thought writers, refers to the idea that thoughts influence chance. The Law of Attraction argues that thoughts (both conscious and unconscious) can affect things outside the head, not just through motivation, but by other means. The Law of Attraction says that which is like unto itself is drawn. Essentially, "if you really want something and truly believe it's possible, you'll get it", but putting a lot of attention and thought onto something you don't want means you'll probably get that too.[1][2] The Law of Attraction became widely popular after the release of The Secret, a 2006 film by Australian television writer and producer Rhonda Byrne. Byrne followed up the film with a bestselling book of the same title and appeared on a series of talk shows in 2007. I have 2 clients doing Life Coaching and stuff like this! HA! It's funny this thread should be here. I am hearing it now. Ron is playing it in the bedroom on the ihome system as he goes to sleep. Agreed, Miguel. I totally believe in its principles. I have it in my itunes and listen to it when I get distracted by negativity and need to get back on track and focus on what I want out of life. I have achieved more in a short period (the last 6 months or so), through mere focus, positive thinking (and work of course)than in years. A lot of people laugh and dismiss believing in law of attraction as if believing in it means you think things will "magically" appear. It's not that at all. It's about believing you can achieve and have what you want and deserve and not losing focus. The thing about the Secret is that you don't have to join any groups or continually buy products or ongoing lessons. You either apply the principles to your life or you don't.

While I believe in the principles of the law of attraction in general, it doesn't mean that if you think about sex orgies with Playboy Playmates and Penthouse Pets all day long, you're gonna get some hot poontang. You might, but it's not just about thinking about it; you have to take some kind of action to manifest your thoughts. For example, if you are homeless and living in a cardboard box in some dark alley, and you think about living in your own mansion with a huge pool in the backyard, you're not just going to magically come into getting a mansion. You have to take steps to improve your living situation (i.e., get a job, get you own studio apartment, then save money for a condo or starter home, etc.).
Likewise, what most people forget is that the law of attraction works in the opposite direction. If for example, you dated a loser and have an attitude that all men you date are losers, the next guy you probably hook up with will be a loser, even if you repeatedly tell yourself "I don't want to date a loser," because your subconscious mind only interprets "date a loser". If you constantly think that someone is out to rob you, then will probably end up being robbed or scammed at some point in the future. Or if you are like the hardcore extremists in the Republican Party in America who campaign on a platform that government doesn't work, and you suddenly find yourself running the government, it will lead to disastrous results (9/11, an unnecessary war in Iraq, horrid response to Hurricane Katrina, Wall Street recklessness which leads to near complete financial collapse, etc.).

It actually credits many sources that have established and taught it. It is just a gathering of teachers and life coaches speaking on it. It is just like one particular subject can be taught by many different schools and teachers.

I read the book...
I'd get on The Secret site and play that game every morning before I'd go to work.. I printed out that blank check--asking the universe for a certain amount of money... I never got a reply.. Then something horrible happened. I'm gonna tell ya'll a sad story. About two Christmas' ago, one of my friends asked me to go with her to deliver a Christmas present to one of her long-time friends--mainly to see this woman's house. This friend of friend was a millionaire (by marriage)--lived in this really cool mansion. She was really nice in spite of having a shitload of money and living in a really cool house on a hill with a terrific view. Well. just after New Year's... I got an email from my friend telling me her friend went for a routine physical... and was diagnosed with acute lymphoma! Or maybe it wasn't routine..because this friend of a friend had a weird infection on her tongue! I can't recall. Anyway, the woman had no white blood cells! So she and her husband took off so she could be treated by the best doctors in the country--they had the money to find the best doctors easily and go to them. Well.. I decided to use what I read about in the Secret.. asking the universe to help her.. I got an email a few days later.. The woman didn't even make it through the first round of treatment. I was shocked and crushed. The woman was young.. It was just a shock. I thought for sure she'd have a chance. And I really wanted to believe if I asked the universe... Anyway.. since then.. I've abandoned the Secret...

I've abandoned the Secret... None of that means that the law of attraction or the principles of the Secret (or any other theory on which it is based) doesn't work. You cannot heal people with the Secret (nor does it claim this). The potential is there, if you tap into it, to make positive changes in your own health (Placebo effect/belief) but you can't just say, so and so is sick, I will wish her healthy and save her from illness. It just doesn't work that way. I wish it would. EDIT: Also, the blank check thing. It doesn't claim that you just fill the check out and the money will just appear. Yes, maybe if you're lucky enough you'll win a lottery or something (I've never had such luck at winning things ). It may come to you in the form of opportunities arising, or ideas (which you must follow through on), or as a chain of events. This is how things have been coming to me. A small door opens here, through which I am given the opportunity to make some headway in my goal. Then another, maybe bigger, or just as small, but with a different lead. All pieces/steps toward my goal. It's not about just wishing for things. There is work required. The check is just an exercise to help you visualize as is the vision board. Like when you were a kid and applied lessons through workbooks (I loved workbooks ). [Edited 2/4/10 7:15am]

Ex-Moderator | I believe that your thoughts and actions go a long way towards achieving what you want (duh), but not in some mystical energy, “the universe is one” kinda way. I think it’s as simple as if you think you can’t do something, you probably won’t be able to.
You won’t ever try and even if you do, you likely won’t be giving it your all. If you think you can, you’re that much more open to possibilities and more importantly, opportunities. It doesn’t mean you will always succeed, but you’ve got a much better chance. No, I haven't read the Secret. I'm pretty sure it would bug the heck out of me. |

Like when you were a kid and applied lessons through workbooks (I loved workbooks ). [Edited 2/4/10 7:15am] I think life happens sometimes--things beyond a person's control happens. It's all how you deal with it. I came to the conclusion some of life is random. What is the expression--life happens while you're making plans?? I do agree with not making the same mistakes over and over again. And I do agree with being so negative a person creates this sort of self-fulfilling prophesy. I do agree there are certain dynamics people create for themselves without even knowing it. I do agree there is a lot within our control--that we can create some of our own destiny to a certain point. But for me... I don't pray to the universe or anyone or anything for anything....except strength to carry on. In a way.. maybe the experience with that woman's sudden death was worth a million dollars to me? It really make me rethink some things... I just don't think there's any one secret except to learn from your mistakes, keeping trying to be the best person you can be.. treat people with respect--not that they're necessarily going to return in kind, keep pursuing something, give yourself a break for being human now and again and give other a break, too... just keep growing and learning as a person, be happy with what you have once and a while [Edited 2/4/10 7:56am] And realize life is here is shorter than you think, so you best make the most of it. [Edited 2/4/10 7:58am] And don't abuse your body, your mind, and your spirit. Everything in moderation... And do the best you can. Just do the best you can.. [Edited 2/4/10 8:03am] Oh... and respect Nature! [Edited 2/4/10 8:04am] Finally, the only thing you can truly control is yourself--even though it can be a challenge more often than not! By taking charge of your own life--then your destiny will follow even though sometimes the unexpected does happen. I mean, this millionaire didn't do anything to develop acute lymphoma. She didn't expect it or create that future for herself. A few weeks before, she was celebrating Christmas with her family and friends. She had all the money in the world for the best medical care, too.. but she still died--not even surviving a week into treatment. It's just one of life's sad ironies. [Edited 2/4/10 8:20am]

I've had much the same experience. I've found that by taking control of my thoughts and being conscious in what I think and say, I pretty much bring about the circumstances I seek. I've also noticed that everyone seems to be doing this too, but when it's unconscious that which is said is often more negative and hence the outcome is too.

I learned about the law of attraction yrs and yrs ago from both my Dad and a psychology class in high school
We have worked with vision boards and intentional workings dealing with conscious thought process towards attraction It works well though I find it interesting that often times you can see the workings of attraction in people that are not conciously aware they are attracting things to them like ... things people put so much time and unintentional thoughts into "hating" something - it comes right into their lives and then they are frustrated
