I can pull it back while it's damp to get it as tight as possible and then do big hot-rollers on the ends to smooth out the waves a bit (and do the little hair-wrap around the tie, which I like). But is that appropriate?

My problem, basically, is that I've never worked in formal/professional setting, and I don't know what women with long hair are expected to do with it. Normally I wouldn't give a fuck, but this is important and I don't want my appearance to be a distraction.

I think what you've described is very pretty and presentable sounding.

I worked at teaching hospitals for years, and I saw tons of pre-med students come in for interviews. The general look was not a sleek, corporate "professional" look. It was more "I'm neat, but it didn't take me an hour to get ready because I'm busy saving motherfuckers lives!"

So I think as long as it's clean and out of your face, you will be just fine and it won't be an issue.
