When Newton wrote the Principia he did so in response to a request
from a friend of his.
Newton was an extremely eccentric man, and had 'misplaced' his original
musings on several of his previous works. So to make it up to his
friend, he set about redoing his original mathmatical equations.


Now before we go into poo pooing Newton as being the guy 'who got it wrong',
let's just take for an minute an examine his genius:

1) He built the first reflecting telescope (allowing for telescopes to become more powerful at a lower cost to build)
2) he developed calculas because he needed a new form of math to accomplish some of his calculations (I mean, damn ). He also didn't tell anybody about it for 20 years. As if it was just something he did to make his work more convenient.

3) He described gravity and motion.


His Principa is possibly one of the greatest intellectual achievements of all time.



So.....


Newton got it wrong. Einstein in his youth explained why.
Oddly in Einteins two documents "The Theory of General Relativity" and the "Theory of Special Relativity" which came later, Eistein completely made the moder day universe "make sense" to scientist.

Here's a brief description as to why Einstein's theory is so brilliant. Also, this is possibly one of the best illustrations and easily understood examples for how fundamentally astounding Einsteins theories where:





If Einstein had just stopped at the General Theory of Relativity, Eistein would have been hailed as one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. But many believe it was a theory just waiting for someone to find it.

However, 10 years later, Einstein developed the 'special' theory of relativity, and this completely changed the universe in which we know it. It changed everything. It solidified his place in history. It was a very short paper, had no footnotes, and gave no credit to any collaborators or sources. In short, it was as if Einstein had just 'imagined' his theory from out of the blue. It is hailed as possibly the most important idea ever introduced by any human being, ever.


Einstein's theory is actually used today. If you use a GPS navigator like a Tom Tom, you are using devices which take his special theory of relativity into account (the satellites that whiz about in space at thousands of miles an hour are all collaborated to take into account the fact that they and your car will perceive time slightly different--but the difference is enough to cause you to miss your turn on a road).
