Try taking a LONG walk, and think about how you most likely are better off than most people in Africa and almost everyone in Haiti. Consider that many of these folks don't have access to clean water, basic education and properly cooked food. Think about how lucky you are having at least those basic things that you take for granted, but many in the 3rd World don't have. How shitty is your life compared to their lives? After you've taken a long walk considering these things, take a long bath and take a nap afterwards. Trust me, you'll feel better. I agree with the spirit of what you posted here. However, it bugs me to see the entire continent of Africa so frequently painted as a pathetic, miserable place. This is not directed solely at you, and it's probably not even what you were trying to say. But I hear it so often. The small country of Haiti is definitely devastated right now. And so are some countries over in the vast continent of Africa. I won't pretend there aren't many suffering people there. But there are just as many thriving, successful, happy, creative and just plain living-their-normal-lives people there too.

Yeah, I admit my comments about the situation in African countries were a bit non-specific , even though my comments weren't meant to say that all Africans were in a bad situation. There are certainly countries in the African content that are more developed, or at least parts of them, (Gabon, South Africa) than the countries typically talked about in the news. And of course there are people in Africa living in relative poverty compared to the Western world but still living happy lives. So I basically agree that the African continent in general gets a bad rep in the press. The comment was intended as a sort of wake-up call for the woe-is-me types who need to realize that relatively speaking they are probably doing OK.
