She always types a bunch of hoodoo-voodoo bullshit (has for at least 10 years now), and never explains herself. I'm just trying to get a straight answer for once. To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.

While of course I wouldn't have any nudy pix on my PC *cough cough, ahem*... I am a bit paranoid about data in general.
So whether it's an old PC in work or one at home, I don't want business or personal info retrievable off old drives (and I'm no IT professional but I've fixed a couple of corrupted drives, so it's quite possible) So I use an 18 volt battery drill with a 1/2" metal drill bit and put a few holes in any drives I'm disposing of. Not subtle, but quite effective.

of pix you'd rather the world not see, or specifically pix of you and your SO together you'd rather the world not see. When your computer finally kicks the bucket... What do you do with the hard drive on those PCs? Or do you just put it out with the rubbish hoping nobody's clever enough to grab the info/pics? Doing drive formatting isn't going to remove the data. You'd have to degauss it. Therefor, the information is always susceptible to being recovered if a person is determined enough to do it. And if your compter crashes your only real option is to bring it to a data recovery company to grab the info....but that exposes the stuff on your drive to them , right? I guess, I've been thinking about it, because it is so easy to recover supposed 'deleted' or 'lost' data. But then I got to thinking...well, how would I remove the data for good? It's not like I can preemptively degauss my drive before it unexpectedly crashes. What do you do with your old PC's hard drive? Dan I like the way you have structured this thread question From a purely visual perspective it looks poetic in its lay out As for the content What you don't remember never happened

The answer is the same for whatever you want to get rid of - financial details, photos, movies.....
if you are keeping the pc or selling it on and dont want them then you get an erase programme that writes over the disk with random characters over and over again making it unrecoverable eg window washer If you are getting rid of your computer, take the hardrive out and take a hammer to it and smash that shiny disk drive to bits or drill through it over and over again simples [Edited 2/25/10 15:48pm]
