NY dairy farmer kills 51 cows, commits suicide COPAKE, N.Y. – State police in New York say an upstate dairy farmer shot and killed 51 of his milk cows in his barn before turning the rifle on himself.
State police found the body of 59-year-old Dean Pierson in his Copake barn on Thursday. A visitor found a note Pierson had left on the barn door that said not to come in and to call police. State police would only say that Pierson was having personal issues. The Columbia County hamlet of Copake is about 115 miles north of New York City. Local farmers buried the cows outside the barn Friday. They would not discuss Pierson or what had happened, but one of the men said these are hard times to be a farmer. unlucky7 reincarnated

Farmers can't compete with giant factory farming.
I can't see how these guys are able to turn profits at all, even with heavy dosses of government subsidies. We all want cheap food--so there's pressure towards giant industry factory farming. I feel for the guy.

^Dairy farming is incredible difficult it is basically ones life, you're up at 3 in the morning to start the milking process and with 51 cows thats going to take up to 3 or 5 hours depending on your equipment factor in the cleaning of each cow, the sterilization of the equipment its a hard road. Also you are pretty much stuck on the farm, rarely if ever do you get 1 day off let along a vacation.
Its hell. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Steak! Those must have been well taken care of if the farmer wasn't forcing hormones on his cows to keep up with the mass produced farms. I hope they didn't waste the meat.
Poor farmer | |

Poor farmer The cows, not the farmer. Seems like the farmer took great care of his cows, despite their demise. IMO, it is a waste to kill a domestic livestock and not use it for food. That's what they are for yanno.
