are there any special considerations i need to take when creating and picking who my web domain carrier/server is?

I'm not an expert on those, but godaddy.com was what I chose and they have excellent customer service.

The website isn't terribly intuitive to a beginner though.

no. I only register my domain name through godaddy and rent server space on their server to place my webpage.

I used Dreamweaver CS4 to create the page and Filezilla to upload my webpages.

I think all of them have 'merchent packages', but I couldn't tell you at all how they work.

The customer service reps at the website are really helpful though. They may be able to advise you. Just tell them you've never done this before and they'll start at the beginning.
