Fanfiction

Do you write it?

Do you read it?

Do you know what it is?

I'm debating as to whether or not to get into the fanfiction related to the Sookie Stackhouse series.

Overall, I'm thinking I'm not going to because, I guess for lack of a better way to put it, it's not "official."

Your thoughts.

I'm really new to it myself.

Honestly, I kinda view it as plagiarism.

I've seen it related to anime and book series like the Sookie Stackhouse books. People will write stories using the character.

Take the SS books. There's two characters Sookie and Eric and they have a "complicated" relationship. Someone might write a story about them. May or may not fit into one of the books.

Stuff like that.

It could also be seen as, say, someone loves a Prince song, so they "re-do" it, adding verses or new musical parts.

Musical fanfiction lol

So it's like if I wrote a story based on Star Wars characters? Or a new episode of Seinfeld?

I think it's pretty much all shoddy writing by people who can't get their own ideas published.
And plagiarism too.
But mostly, it's just crap.

Not of the series you're talking about, but I've read bits and pieces of other stuff over the years, out of curiousity. But yeah, it's usually just really bad writing. lol

Or a way for geeky fans of a particular book, movie, TV show or character to extend their enjoyment of their favorite stories. shrug

I think meow85 is pretty into it.

lol I meant in general!

I've been wondering because, as much as I L.O.V.E. the books, or Prince's music or whatever, I've never been driven to try to add to it, write my own version etc.

So there's that, plus I was wondering if anyone found that it actually enhanced their enjoyment of whatever the fanfiction was based on.

My daughter is really into it with her anime and I get concerned. I guess, as her mother, I want to see her own original ideas. I worry that this, you could call it hobby, passion, of her's is putting her own creativity on the back burner.

As for the geek fan extending their enjoyment of their favorite whatever (book/music/anime/etc) I'm guessing it must work for them. Maybe I've just been purple brainwashed though and just want to view the work as the originating artist made it. No embellishments from outside sources.

I guess, to some degree, this is also fascinating to me. Those of you who know me know, when I get into something I REALLY get into something. Then I see some of the discussions here or on other boards about other subjects and I'm like HOLY SHIT. The level of disection is mind boggling to me.

Nah, never written it. I've just had a curiousity and hit up a HP board, lol. Suprisingly, not all slash is scary... It's FUNNY. lol

I'm not sure if this qualifies. I write short stories and I wrote one that was losely based on the song, "Wasted Kisses". Prince is not a character in it or anything. The story just uses elements from the song.

That sounds like the song inspired you. That's cool.

The reason I'm torn is on one hand, in fanfiction, there's the plagiarism angle then on the other hand it's people writing and being creative in their way and I would never want to minimize that.

Yeah, the song definitely inspired it. But it's in no way plagiarism. I don't use a single line from the song. It's just similar in subject matter. I always liked the way that song is open to interpretation and the listener is never quite sure which direction its going. I wanted to write something along those lines.

I suppose plagiarism would come into play moreso when people write things using someone else's characters. For instance, if I wrote a story about Superman. But it would be easy to take elements of one thing and change it just enough to make it into something that's your own.
