The logical answer was FOX to offer him the 11.30 PM slot, but they don't seem to interested. I think Conan should just take a break and regroup. He'll have a clearer focus on what to do next. I still don't plan on watching Leno when he comes back, as if I ever did. I spent many a sleepless nights back in the 90s though, dozing through his show just to tape the Musical guests!

But Fox isn't the only viable network either. Sure it's considered one of the big four now, but most everyone has basic cable, and a network like FX (read: FOX) or whatever could snap him up. I think he'd be even funnier on Showtime (a CBS network), where he could cut loose a bit more if he wanted.

As a side note: I'm surprised ABC hasn't canceled that ever-boring Night Line and pulled Kimmell to the 11:35 spot. That would be a true war of late night, and quite fun! Night Line was created to cover the Iran Crisis, and just stuck around afterward. It has that Martin Bashir guy on it all the time, and most times it seems more tabloid-ish than not. Nix it, and put Jimmy on at 11:35. It amazes me that ABC has taken a purposeful back seat to the late night wars when they have a great vehicle with Kimmel's show. Put Conan on Fox at 11:35 (although Fox only airs 2 hours of Prime Time and has no real late night network programming except on Saturday night), and let the chips fall where they may. Let all four hash it out. That would be HOT.

Why would they cancel Nightline? It's a big hit in the time slot. It's neck and neck with Letterman at this point (averaging 4 million viewers to his 4.2 million) and it's big with the 18 to 49 year olds that advertisers want. It's quite likely that after all the talk-show wars die down that Nightline will go to No. 1.

Conan got royally screwed by NBC. I don't blame Jay Leno in the least, he thought the whole idea of switching shows around was a mistake from the beginning. NBC owns this whole mess, and now they're paying for it. They better hope they haven't screwed up "The Tonight Show" for good, as it's not likely to be the same even after Jay returns.

Personally, I don't think it's a matter of choosing between Jay or Conan. I like them both for what they do. They each have different styles of comedy, and I appreciate each of their individual brands of humor.

It was a matter of choosing Jay or Conan when it came to the almighty dollar and the ratings. nod

How has Jimmy Fallon gotten through all of this unscathed? He's the one who should be getting canceled.

You stole the words right out of my mouth! He's lucky he's got The Roots. They're the only thing that makes his show watchable, IMHO.

Well it's official now:

NBC ‘Pleased’ Leno Is Back on ‘Tonight’
by Tracy Phillips
Jan 21st, 2010 | 12:37 PM | Comments 32
The late-nightmare haunting NBC is coming to some form of a conclusion–but the drama is likely far from over in this exhaustive battle.

It’s official: ‘The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien‘ is dead and ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno‘ is being resurrected.

Leno returns to ‘The Tonight Show,’ which he hosted for 17 years, beginning March 1st. Conan’s last ‘Show’ is this Friday.

NBC just issued the following release on popular late-night host Jay Leno’s return:

“We’re pleased that Jay is returning to host the franchise that he helmed brilliantly and successfully for many years, said Jeff Gaspin, Chairman, NBC Universal Television Entertainment. He is an enormous talent, a consummate professional and one of the hardest-working performers on television.

The network was all-business in its remarks on the departure of Conan O’Brien below:

“NBC and Conan O’Brien have reached a resolution of the issues surrounding O’Brien’s contract to host ‘The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.’

“Under terms of an agreement that was signed earlier today, NBC and O’Brien will settle their contractual obligations and the network will release O’Brien from his contract, freeing him to pursue other opportunities after September 1, 2010.

“O’Brien will make his final appearance as host of ‘The Tonight Show’ on January 22.

In the meantime, NBC plans to fill the transition time between January 25th and February 12th with repeats of Conan’s version of ‘The Tonight Show.’

confused
I have no desire to watch the tonight show at all after all of this. My last episode watching will be tomorrow night with Conan's last show. GO TEAM COCO!!!!
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

NBC was trying to fix something that wasn't broke to begin with. I hate Leno, but he got good ratings. Why not let him retire like Johnny Carson did, then let Conan take over? They got greedy, then got greedy again when their decision didn't work.

I thought about that, but when I referenced the original picture, I noticed that Conan's eyebrows or otherwise wasn't colored. It really was just about the pompadour, so I went with just that.

What would you think of this late-night line-up?

11:00 The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
11:30 The Colbert Report
12:00 The Conan O'Brien Show

If I was an executive with Comedy Central, I'd be on the phone with Conan's people the second he's off the air at NBC.

Johnny Carson passed away on January 23rd.

Conan's final show will end at 12:35am on January 23rd.
