The Book of Eli

Just got back from seeing it and it was pretty good...nice twist at the end and for some strange reason,I would think of "The Fifth Element",when I would see Gary Oldman's character...but it was a good movie.

I didn't like it. The acting was horrible. Gary Oldman ought to give back the money they paid him. And what was the deal with his right-hand man? Torn between good and evil, or what? Worst death scene in history.

I had no problem with Mila Kunis, except that every time she opened her mouth, I heard Meg Griffin.

The only good part of the movie was when they went to those old peoples' home.

And I am not even sure what the twist was at the end. I won't spoil it for those of you determined to waste your money on this, but IMO even the twist was ambiguous. Was he, or did he just have a book meant for someone else?

I am willing to suspend my disbelief when I go to the movies, but the whole premise of why there were no more Bibles around was just plain stupid. Although, there is a contingent in P&R that will absolutely love that premise. When they explained the lack of Bibles, I could almost hear my faithless friends cheering with glee, LOL.

So anyway, big bummer in my opinion.

Sorry! Are you bummed because I spoiled something, or did you have higher expectations that you feel won't be met based on my observations?

'Cause I had high expectations for this one, too. Shucks, we chose it over "Sherlock Holmes"...

That's it. The previews looked so good. That's always the way it is though. Guess you should just rewind the previews over and over and be happy...don't see the movie and ruin it. shrug lol

One time I sat next to a guy on a plane that created previews. I told him he was either a magician or the worst person in the world. He laughed, he knew what I meant.

I wish the movie was better, but then again I am very devout. For those that aren't, they may see it as even worse. Or as high comedy. Hard to tell.

I want to see "Legion". I think it looks cool.

In my defense, I didn't think the previews of "The Book of Eli" were any good. All they showed was Denzel killing people, and while he's a great actor, he is no Arnold or Sly Stallone. So I wasn't buying him as a killing machine going in.

But my son wanted to see it, and so I ditched going to a great high school basketball game for this. The way I see it, he owes me $9.50.

He doesn't see it that way, though.

But the previews made you think it was a book with powers and that Denzel was some kind of supernatural thug. I'm so sick of being disappointed with Hollywood. mad

"supernatural thug"?..then I can understand why you didn't like it.I see that you stated that you didn't get the twist either. The fact XXXXX and the bible was XXXXX was the twist. He was given XXXXX by god to finish his task..Reviews said this was based on a story in the book of Elijah, just Mad Maxed out..maybe this info helps.

Oldman was basically "Zorg" from "The Fifth Element"..just not as over the top. When he found out the Bible was XXXXX,I thought he was going to yell out "The stones aren't here!"..lol..he was disappointing

Mila was eye candy,I guess..and whenever she speaks, she'll be Meg Griffin..lol

Denzel was cool..not much dialouge..thought there would be more biblical references, but he was Ok

Since my popcorn cost more than my ticket(matinee)..I can't complain

I just came back from seeing it. Overall, I thought the movie was decent. It could have been much better and the premise was a bit silly, but I liked it.

Saw it, and I thought it was alright. Long on dialogue, short on action. When I left I didn't have a desire to see it a second time, but I didn't feel like I wasted my money. It was a good attempt. Despite the focus on one book, to me the undercurrent message was that books are what build civilization, punctuated by Carnegie's reading of Mussolini, the fact he had other books especially, it seemed, magazines (another product placement moment) burned, plus what the folks were doing towards the end of the movie and the bookshelf scene, I liked that premise, I took out of it that 1000s of years of knowledge is what makes us who we are today. I had to laugh at how stylish Solara (Mila) and Eli, too, were dressed on the road, even after the drainage pipe scene not a tear or wrinkle, her shirt looked like it was perfectly dry-cleaned and pressed, very distracting. This is not a movie for those who are sensitive to scenes of rape, though nothing is graphic, it's enough to be disturbing to those who are sensitive to it, there should be a warning. It's attempt to capitalize on the Christian dollar, is too obvious, flimsy and it's not gonna work for a lot reason, the violence, you just don't get that deep spiritual feeling, stuff like that. In the theater I saw it, I didn't notice anyone leaving, and from the giggles (at the right moments) the gasps and random comments folks seem to enjoy it enough. It was a mixed audience in white, black, hispanic, younger and older, mostly men. The guys really seemed to enjoy the fight in the shade under the bridge, all kinds of "yeahs" and "ooohs" whatever all that means. The only tingly moments for me is the long overhead shot of the landscape graduation, the first thoughts to me were "hope", and "life always continues", that kind of stuff always gets to me. I must admit I didn't fully grasp the full twist at the end, a major big duh on my part, until I actually read it somewhere, which is possibly the only reason I might see the movie again to catch it like in "The Sixth Sense". I can say I respect the project because there are little hidden tidbits like in Star Trek, not quite as deep but somewhat interesting, that let me know that the writer(s) put a lot of thought into the details of the movie. Except for maybe where the heck was the gasoline coming from.

Oh and Denzel looks pretty good shaved, even for a old guy.

Please, you know Denzel was very good in his role. I tell ya', no matter what movie that man is in, he always has that sexy walk. Even with him look scraggly, you could it was him when he walked through that ruckus.

just saw it cool. it was okay, i guess. denzel is prolly my fave actor, so i'm kinda biased lol, but he did his thing. all scraggly, but still cool cool. not his usual forte, but i bought him as an action star thumbs up!. had forgotten all about mila kunis and meg for a minute until y'all mentioned it lol. she is fooking pretty, i don't care love. she was fine. i like gary oldman too (the professional headbang). he was o-kayyy in this hmm. i tried not to take it too seriously (i'm not really religious anyways demon), but i feel what someone said about it being kinda nuts, but i played along lol. not a whole lotta action (like that same someone said giggle), but the action that was up there was still pretty badass headbang. kinda dragged in spots (didn't help that i had to pee towards the end stoned). it was entertaining for what it was (but it wasn't "all that" lol). i'd watch it again though popcorn.

Arnold and Sly would KILL to have 1/4 of Denzel's acting ability!
He can play a Teacher, A lawyer, a hood, a cop, all convincingly. That brother has range as an actor!
OK, got that off of my chest.
The only thing I didn't care for in the movie was that there was no real explanation for what happened to cause the disaster. That aside, the movie wasn't bad and I enjoyed it for the most part.

WHOA!!!

OK, I haven't seen it yet, but I have seen every movie with Gary Oldman, and he is one of the greatest actors ever. True method actor, like a chameleon.
