I need a vacation.... Anyone have any destination ideas? I'm thinking some place tropical and warm, maybe Costa Rica. Has anyone been there? I don't even know what coast to look on, what is safe etc. etc.
It would be a 4 night 5 day trip max...just a quick getaway so I don't want to go too too far. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Puerto Rico is beautiful. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

That was another option but it's kind of expensive!

Ex-Moderator | I've never really been anywhere tropical and warm, other than New Orleans and Miami, if those count.
It appears I am now officially planning a 4-week trip to Thailand in the fall. My manager has been infomred and I've started the preliminary planning. I haven't taken more than 4-5 days off in a row in years. So I'm quite excited. And I hope to make a quick trip to San Francisco in the next month or two. |

Amazing scenery. Terrific multi-ethnic food, and there are always amazing (REALLY amazing music festivals). Look for information on when their festivals take place and plan a trip for that period. I sat on a plane and spoke with someone from there and he told me all about the city and why he chose to live there (he's a US citizen). It's definitely on my places to visit now. And a 30 minute to 1 hour drive takes you into wilderness, ocean or mountains. All beautiful.

I have friends that go to the Carribean alot.
They did not like the Dominican Republic. They do like Cozumel. They keep wanting us to go with them. I want to go to Hawaii. I'm firmly planted in denial

I've been all over the Caribbean and the beaches we saw in the Dominican were the best. You can't really leave the resort unless you're on a tour, but that rings true in just about any place in the Caribbean. I have friends who live in Hawaii but if I go I want to stay for 2 weeks and that is not possible right now. Vancouver looks beautiful but it's out of the question right now. Too cold! I need some fun in the warm sun! [Edited 1/21/10 7:10am]

Dan has found apartments I can rent for a month for pretty cheap. I've been looking into doing a short yoga retreat while I'm there (on an island, all vegetarian food and being all studious for a few days) but other than that my plans are quite open. I wanna see everything I can. And I'm looking into learning some basic thai so I can get around by myself and such. Right now it's looks like I'll be there probably mid-November to mid-December but it might be earlier. I'm a little afraid of getting there in October and catching the end of rainy season, though it would probably be a lot cheaper. But I'm scared of the roaches. |

Should be able to get a nice apartment to rent for a month for not too much, though probably not somewhere like Sukhumwit or Silom. Definitely learn some basic Thai - it's so easy to get into to be able to use a bit of conversational stuff and order food and whatnot. Mon and I won't be around in December. But we will be around in November. September's the rainiest season in Bangkok. Rainy season's usually a bit later down south in the islands. October's not normally too wet in Bkk (in a normal year - this year wasn't normal!) and November should only have a few days with rain. You won't see roaches in your apartment. Maybe occasionally in the street at night if you're catching a bite to eat or if you stay in a 'traditional' Thai house for whatever reason (though thinking about it, I can't remember the last time I saw one, even in this broken down shabby old house). Same with rats and snakes. All you'll probably see are geckos and 'jing-jok' and they're cute! I'll teach you Thai and I promise not to trick you into unwittingly saying naughty things. . The best place I ever went was the Ambergris Keys in Belize. Nicest people EVER, and you could eat all the fresh lobster you could hold for $7. Of course, that was in 1990 but still, that was way cheap then.
If you're interested, look into this place. The Honeymoon Suite is the best hut they have but in any event, make sure you stay in an upstairs hut room rather than a downstairs hut room. The views are better. http://www.ramons.com/

More on the San Pedro/Ambergris Caye.
If you wear shoes, you're overdressed. There are (or were) about two cars on the island. The village of San Pedro is a 5 minute walk along the beach from Ramon's. If you like to dive, Belize is one of the top dive spots in the world. The fishing is great, too. I took my guitar and spent one whole week living Jimmy Buffet's life on the beach. It was awesome. You have to fly from the Belize airport to the Ambergris Caye in a Cessna 150 taildragger. At least, that's what we took over. It was so cool. I sat next to the pilot. I don't think we got more than 1,000 feet off the ground. The views were awesome. And the Ambergris Caye strip is grass - grass! No lights, either so you can only get there or leave during the day. It's a British protectorate and extremely safe. This makes me want to go back!

They do, however, have geckos that wriggle their way up onto you on the street and show you flip books with pics of their sister and invite you to take her to a room.
