i've got some stale bran flakes. i dont know how long they've been in the cabinet, but i dont want them to go to waste. what to do?? should i make muffins? throw them out?

Throw it out for the squirrels and birds. It's what I do.

i just threw out 5 boxes of cake mix...they expired in 08. what a waste.

That's really all you can do if it's incredibly stale. I tend to do that anyway with any kind of bread or bread/wheat-related item. Only thing is now, the birds are so conditioned that anytime someone walks on our back porch or opens the back door, about fifteen to twenty birds land on the power lines and the fence.

I try not to waste anything, and if I can throw some older, non-moldy bread out for the birds, or some random Cheerios for the squirrels, then I will.
