What do you think of when you think of "Asians"? (please no politically correct bullshit)

I just realized that I am largely ignorant of what it even means
to be Asian. I mean, I've classified myself as Asian for ages.
But I'm starting to realize just how 'different' Asians are from
one another when you break them down by ethnic groups and nationalities.

They used to "look all the same" to me. I couldn't tell a Korean apart
from a Thai from a Chinese. And on T.V. ads and Internet adds,
I can't really tell them apart even now (this is largely because most
Asian cultures copy the Japanese or Koreans) so even though Thais
are of several different 'colors', only the Korean-looking or Japanese-looking
models ever get shown on T.V. or ads.

But in real life, I'm starting to tell the difference between them.
I'm starting to realize just how off-the-mark even my Asian ass is
about what it means to be Asian.

and when I step back, I ask myself, "what does it mean?' WHAT DOES IT MEAN?"

Hell, I don't know.

Yall black folks reading this---did you have any type of introspection
where you didn't know what the hell it meant to be black in America?

I met the first hairy Asian guy I've ever known today. I just stared
at him thinking to myself, "Is he mixed?". Apparently he's not mixed.

Anyways, I'm rambling.

What are your honest non politically correct opinions of Asians?

Mods, please try and be tolerant to any posts that may seem 'offensive'.
I'm not looking to incite a race riot. I'm just trying to get at the truth
of perceptions. If I can be so far off the mar, and I'm even Asians, I know
damned well others here have been too.

For those of you who don't want to reveal your own opinions just pretend
a family members has those opinions and post those. thanks.

i was so fascinated by Asians that i have spent my adult life studying their languages and cultures. sadly, Westernization has eroded any interesting differences that might have existed even 25-30 years ago when i was a kid. who would have thought that studying something intently would make it boring?

they're just people. i can't think of anything meaningful to say to differentiate them from any other people.

that ain't PC pandering, it's just how i feel.

(of course, i focused on East Asia, particularly Japan. i really couldn't talk about Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent.)

the only negative thing i could say about asian folk is completely NY based, and mostly it's kind of funny to watch. you'll see it once you live here...

you'll be waiting for a train, and when it arrives, a lot of little old asiasn will push and shoulder you to be right in front of the door. the second the door opens, they push and shoulder to get a seat.

when it really gets silly is when they get off at the next stop too.

I had a couple of close friends who were Korean when I was young. Both were adopted by white parents. I remember when I was hanging out at one friend’s house one day and we were just babbling about nothing (as kids do) and I asked her if she took after her mom or her dad more. She just looked at me and started laughing “Carrie!”. lol

boxed

My first thought was - wow, that was silly, but it shows that I didn’t really even think about her being a different race than her parents. Then I worried I wasn’t sensitive enough about it. Maybe that bothered her in some way. We never really talked about it and that was the end of it.

My other Korean friend’s parents thought I was a bad influence. They were super Christian and knew I was an atheist. I was an honor student in every accelerated class who never got in trouble EVER and I was a bad influence. lol I still find that hilarious.

I tell you all this as my friendships with these two girls are probably where I get most of my ideas about Asians from. And, well, they were just my friends. If anything, I thought it was cool to have a diverse group of friends.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I don’t really think about it much. shrug It’s part of white privilege, I know, but I don’t think about what it’s like to be Asian in America, or in the world for that matter. Sure, I know what the stereotypes are. But that’s about as far as that goes.

Now I just want to travel all over Asia and take cooking classes. smile

What do I think? Since I have been dating one for over 4 yrs now, and from what I have seen with his family, very tight knit, controling and sadly very closed minded on the most part. But this could be his family, because they are very old school Vietnamese. I don't think negative of Asians, because I hope to one day call my bf's family my family. I do find myself wanting to know more and more about their beliefs and the history of their culture and the country.

This really doesn't have much to do with the thread other than bananas are yellow, but I would love to see a picture of you eating a banana slowly.

That's what I want. Asian ass. There I said it. I'm sure it's politcally incorrect to objectify a racial group, but I think as someone who is part asian, part african and part european, I can tell you to kiss my ass.

But besides the hotness issue, many of my friends over the years have been Indian or Pakistani (I'm a Londoner, so it's a bit like 'pick n mix'). Great friends and although I respect the whole 'family' thing and see its benefits (in comparison with my detonated brethren), there was also a lot of ugly stuff - very paternalistic, controlling (but I guess that's just the perspective of a wayward individualist). Did I mention that they're hot?

As to the other group of Aisans (Japanese, Koreans, Thais), I know them mainly through my work as a teacher. The Japanese are wonderfully resepctful, the Koreans can be quite nuts (in a good way) and the Thias seem to be the warmest of the three.

Like the OP I never used to be able to tell the difference, but now I can and I would like to sample them one by one.

The cultures are very fascinating. About the biggest thing I might say is when you see an Asian, they are usually either really attractive, or not so much so. I was watching Menace to Society the other day and remembering how Blacks and Asians had stupid prejudices against each other, but in my high school there were many Asians and I never had any problems with them. They were just regular ole folks! Many of them are intelligent and have that desire to succeed which is awesome.

And I love Chinese food... nod

I don't think yo "be" Asian, or "be" Black, and I think today on MLK day, people should take a moment and reflect again on when there was a dream that everyone could be united, and share the positives about themselves with the world and stop judging on a superficial level. Judge people on what they do, not for the color of their skin and the slant of their eyes.

i just wish some of us in the united states could band together to be afforded some of the same economic oppotunites to keep businesses open, etc.

i'm on my pro-black campaign this season i guess,

but overall, asians are cool, some of the older ones are politely close-minded, but never to a fault as my experience.

Okay, so let me say something about my Black people on the train, just to even it out, lol. Black guys sit on the train with their legs spread so wide apart, like... "nobody better sit within 50 feet of me", or like their balls are so big they need to take up 3 seats, lol.

Most of my familiarity with Asians is with Japanese people and culture, and in all sincerity the the first thing I usually think of how gorgeous the men are and how fine they look in their preference for Italian suits. I also think about how wonderful the Japanese kitchen is an how the ladies have impossibly perfect waistlines.

you all know that Indian people are considered Asian too? But I think the stereotype is "oriental". I remember there was a "Slant Film Festival" described as Asian made or Asian themed, and I contacted them and said, I'm Indian, and that is considered to be Asian right? but my films have nothing particularly Asian about them, but I made them... but I'm indian...

and they said... "We'll check... but I don't know"

Yes, I agree that in and of itself it's not racist. But you just can't help but notice certain patterns among certain groups when you're just sitting there on the train "people watching".

And I sooooo agree with you on the Black and Hispanic youth when they get on the train after school (...BEFORE school, they're too sleepy to act out, lol). They need to be sooooo damned LOUD and disrespectful in their language and actions. It's like they need the entire universe to know THEY are on the train, lol. When I encounter a "gaggle" of these unruly teens on the train, I think to myself... "I can't wait for y'all to start getting laid, so you can calm the fuck down", lol.
