I'll have to point my wife at this thread, she's obsessed with getting a kitten (but we live in a flat, so it's not a great idea for us at the moment). I'm definitely a "cat person" more than a doggy person though (doggies are great too tho). Ian, my b/f and I live in a flat and we have two kitties As long as they have enough room to run around, they'll be fine.

That's the problem - we're in a top floor flat, there's no easy access to a garden, and there's really only one or two rooms they could safely have access to. Plus there's loads of cats in the area. I think it would be a bit cruel for us to keep a cat, until we're living somewhere a bit more convenient. I've had loads of cats though when I was a kid. My sisters have two long-haired cats called Basil and Ted.

My sisters have two long-haired cats called Basil and Ted. We're in an upper flat too. But, I keep the kitties inside the house. If you are thinking of having the kitties go outside, then, yes, it's best to wait until you have a garden/yard of your own. It would probably be safest for them (although, the vets recommend that you keep kitties inside 24/7 -- as long as they have enough room to run and enough toys/playtime they're happy )

My sisters have two long-haired cats called Basil and Ted. Don't worry about not being able to let the kitty outside. It is much safer and healthier for the cat to stay indoors (there is no "natural" state for a domestic cat, and while they have fun outside, so would a 2 year old, and you don't let them run around unsupervised). Sorry to you outdoor cat people, but I work in a vet hospital, and based on what I've seen, I think it should be illegal to let cats roam outdoors. I have two indoor kitties in a one-bedroom apartment. They have zero interest in going outside, or in doing much at all besides sleeping, eating, pooping, and being cuddled, and they keep each other company while I'm at work/school. And I looove them.
