Ex-Moderator | Depends on what you’re abstaining from.
But, yeah… I went several months without alcohol last year while I was training for a race (running) and even then I had to allow myself to cheat a couple of times. I’m considering doing it again from February to June. |

For me right now it's Diet Pepsi and sweets.
It's really hard for sure.

I think it depends on your attitude towards what you're abstaining from and the substance, obviously.
I find sugar and caffeine the VERY toughest things to abstain from. But I've found when I abstain from meat, I actually enjoy it after a couple of days (if not immediately) and often don't crave or miss meat for months. I feel better too, so it may be part of the reason why it's easy to abstain from. I cut my alcohol consumption down to basically nothing. The last time I had a drink was quite a while ago, and the time before that was ages. I think I've gone a year without touching an alcoholic drink before. I don't mind alcohol, but I guess I like being in my full faculties when in a social situation now, , especially in a city that's still unfamiliar to me--I want to be 'in' the moment. I know guys who only drank a beer or two a day who found it VERY difficult to cut down or quit. Alcoholism is still alcoholism if you only drink a beer every few days, honestly--if the substance is taken away from your normal routine and you find yourself craving it or adversely affected, you're addicted. Good on you for cutting down or cutting out.

Good on you for cutting down or cutting out. I'm off it til February. For health and financial reasons. Not had a drink since 3rd January, and not been bothered. but I could murder a pint of my avatar “If I can shoot rabbits/then I can shoot fascists”

Yeah, when you don't really want to, it sure does. Though I think it's nice to step away from most "vices" for a minute every now and again.
I have to pass a piss test for a job shadowing thing I'm doing this week, so I've been off the for about the past month. I thought I would miss it way more than I do. Not like I was a daily user, but I like it for specific situations and moods. Been fine without it. Though I might have to go and re-watch Avatar 3D after the test. . . "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? Do I look it up in a Fag-to-English dictionary?"

Pish. True alcholism is either when you need to be inebbriated to function or when the physical craving for alchohol is so overwhelming it takes precident over basic hygene and human communication. A beer every few days has been proven healthier for the body and immune system than not having a beer (or any barley-based booze) every few days. Serm, hiv a drink.
