What Celebrities START trends, and which ones FOLLOW trends? I've always been abslutely annoyed by two bands:
1) Metallica 2) Alice in Chains Both were hair bands who were affected by the 'grunge' revolution that toppled the glam-rock bands of the 80's. Metallica, though it didn't change it's sound terribly much, changed it's look and repackaged itself as a hard rock band that even headlined Lalapalooza one year---dark days for that festival indeed. (And I like some of their songs believe it or not) Alice in Chains--well, those posers just did whatever they needed to in order to sell records but still look legit. I still remember the old days of them getting bood on 'death metal/hard metal' festivals in Florida. But trend STARTERS sometimes bug me too. Let's face it, the long-hair craze that started about 6 or 7 years ago and defined much of the 'look' for younger males in the first decade of this new millennium, was largely influenced by shows like "The OC". The problem with longer hair, is that it requires the man wearing it to be good looking. If you're not good looking, it end up look even more atrocious than you are. Very few so-so looking guys should be wearing long hair--Only Howard Stern comes to mind. Long hair requires a slender frame, soft facial features, etc. etc. (of course this is only my opinion). So, which ones do you feel follow trends? Which ones make trends? I'm more annoyed by those who follow trends and think they're being clever or 'trendy'. 
Fucking Rivers Cuomo from WEEZER annoyed the piss out of me before with all his stupid hipster-chic style swapups. He's lucky he's kind of cute, because I'd totally be writing him hate mail if he wasn't and stuff.

As for personally, I’d say I’m probably not a trend setter, but not always a follower either. If I AM buying into a trend, I tend to be an early adopter. But not always. Sometimes I’m shamelessly late and couldn’t care less.
I will say – there are times I get it in me that I want a certain color combination or certain cut of skirt or something and I can’t find it in stores ANYWHERE and I get SO frustrated and remind myself I should just be making my own clothes and then a year later it’s everywhere. Maybe you could call that a trend intuition? Either way – sometimes I follow and sometimes I don’t and through it all I have my own thing going on. I think I’ve done my job if friends can look at something and say – that’s totally Carrie. Or totally not.  |
