New York Times to charge for articles online

The slippery slope has begun:

NEW YORK — The New York Times says it will charge readers for full access to its Web site starting in 2011.

.After months of deliberation, the newspaper said Wednesday it will use a metered system, allowing free access to a certain number of articles and then charging users for additional content.

I'm not sure how loyal their following is though.
We'll have to see if this becomes a business model others can
follow, or if users just migrate over to cnn.com or usatoday.com
and such. (not the same thing Nytimes users will say, but it's free. lol )

sad I read the NY Times online everyday.

I thought they already tried this? Or maybe it's just that you have to sign up for a free account to read certain articles.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

CNN used to make you buy a Real Superpass to access a lot of their content, but that passed too. There are still newspaper websites that charge you for full obituaries, and other articles. Perhaps the archives are worth charging for, but for current news it seems a bit greedy. Since when do we have to pay for information?

I understand newspapers are desperate for money. Newspaper is a dead medium to some extent, but in reality, if folks don't get it from the NY Times for $9.99 a month, they'll get it somewhere else for free 24/7.

We only buy the Sunday paper for the fliers and coupons. And only a couple of coupons justify and cover the cost of the paper. But there sure is a lot of waste w/ that which goes right back into the recycle bin. As a side note, why not just sell the fliers for $1.00 a bundle? Hmmm.
