I think it is practical to want something reasonably unique so you can tell your phone ringer from either people's in a noisy environment. However I do believe that there is a point in using simple sounds like saw and square waves ... they are very clearly audible in a noisy environment. These handsets with polyphonic ringers (little MIDI tunes) can barely be heard at all. Here is a thought: "The more unique you try to be, the more you conform to the herd." - IceNine It's not about trying to be "individual" it's about being able to hear your fucking phone over the hundreds of generic Nokia ringers you'll hear on a train every day  Okay, you got me, but downloading ring tones to be "individual" is about the most conformist thing going. 
It's like buying one of those pre-packaged faceplates for your phone to show your individuality. Some of them you have to convert into the RTTTL format before receiving them. You can usually 'send' the ringtone to your phone by entering your phone type and phone number.
I have NO idea how safe this is but I've done it with no adverse effects. I've used this website with no problems: http://www.2thumbswap.com/ (It's down now due to server overload, but should be back up soon. Also watch out for pop-up hell, but it's still free!)  I mean, like, where is the sun? | |
