A cellular phone should never ring in any other way than a standard phone ringing sound... that other shit makes me want to kill people.

I think it is practical to want something reasonably unique so you can tell your phone ringer from either people's in a noisy environment.

However I do believe that there is a point in using simple sounds like saw and square waves ... they are very clearly audible in a noisy environment. These handsets with polyphonic ringers (little MIDI tunes) can barely be heard at all.

It's not about trying to be "individual" it's about being able to hear your fucking phone over the hundreds of generic Nokia ringers you'll hear on a train every day smile

Okay, you got me, but downloading ring tones to be "individual" is about the most conformist thing going. biggrin

It's like buying one of those pre-packaged faceplates for your phone to show your individuality. Exactly how fucking individual are you if you express your individuality by engaging in blatant consumerism and purchasing products that were meant to serve a certain demographic?

What in the fuck is this supposed to mean? No, really...what's the logic behind this?

EDIT: By the way, I owned Motorola Star-tek once, lost it, and realized I preferred not being contacted so I never replaced it...I am currently phoneless.

Can't survive without it... wish I could though!
Even when I'm away from my PC I'm constantly connected to email through GPRS and Bluetooth. It's quite sad. As long as I stay in the vaguely civilised and developed parts of the world, I'm constantly online. How sad is that!?!

It fucking means that the more you try to be an individual by downloading "personalized" ring tones and buying "personalized" face plates for your phones, the more you conform to corporate ideals and are therefore less of an individual each time you identify yourself as a member of whatever demographic group.

Can you identify the logic now?

To that I say, do what you want to do, but don't feel like an idividual by buying pre-packaged items that are meant to make you feel like an "individual." Individuality can be expressed by designing your own faceplate if you want to change it...

If you dig a song and download it, that is cool too... just don't think that it makes you an "individual" or that it sets you apart.

No, I cannot, goddamnit!

Well, goddamn it... exactly how idividual is it if you purchase things that are MASS-PRODUCED for consumption by CONSUMERS?

If you want to be INDIVIDUAL, make your own fucking faceplate.

Right, but they are certainly not expressing "individuality" by purchasing mass-produced items...

Do a search for them. I have a ton of free ones. I've been using Take on me by Aha for a while now.

Some of them you have to convert into the RTTTL format before receiving them. You can usually 'send' the ringtone to your phone by entering your phone type and phone number.

I have NO idea how safe this is but I've done it with no adverse effects. I've used this website with no problems:

http://www.2thumbswap.com/

(It's down now due to server overload, but should be back up soon. Also watch out for pop-up hell, but it's still free!)
