Artie Lange suicide attempt

http://www.nypost.com/p/p...NlzbsiW3oJ

Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Lange's frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law-enforcement source said. Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange's management team confirmed that the Howard Stern sidekick stabbed himself, adding that his mother had come to visit him that day to drop off food. Surgeons managed to save Lange despite heavy bleeding. "We all have our demons," Stern said on-air this week, referring to Lange's past battles with addiction. "Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He's a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don't forget how great he is."

WOW, this is really sad.
For me, Artie has been the bright spot of the show for the last several years.
His characters and one liners are my favorite parts of the show. (His "guy that laughs at everything" character had me in tears lol ) When he was off last week I was pissed because I thought he was just goofing off and not coming to work again.
Had no idea that it was anything this serious! Hopefully he'll take the time off that he needs and gets better.
****On a selfish note, PLEASE don't bring Martling back! F Jackie mad

He stabbed himself NINE TIMES!?!? Oi! shake That's an extraordinary attempt, when suicide -- generally speaking -- needn't be that painful, slow, intense or potentially gory. Sounds like he was really incensed at himself or someone/something else in that moment... and probably high.

I hope he physically recovers quickly and gets whatever other help he needs. No one should hurt like that.

I wonder if anyone would comment on this. I'm listening to a recording of today's show now. Howard discussed it without reading the article (so he was vague) but really cares about Artie, and you could tell from his lack of words. Right now he moved on to a new subject...Medicated Pete.

Elliot Smith, for one (although some seem to believe his girlfriend killed him):

Smith died on October 21, 2003, at age 34 from two stab wounds to the chest. According to girlfriend Jennifer Chiba - with whom he was living at the time - the two were arguing, and she locked herself in the bathroom to take a shower. Chiba heard him scream, and upon opening the door, saw Smith standing with a knife in his chest. She pulled the knife out, after which he collapsed and she called 9-1-1. Smith died in the hospital with the time of death listed as 1:36 p.m. While Smith's death was originally reported as a suicide, the official autopsy report released in December 2003 left open the question of possible homicide. A possible suicide note, written on a Post-it, read, "I'm so sorry - love, Elliott. God forgive me."

Artie is the possessor of one of the fastest (and sharpest) wits in the West. Hilarious guy with a heart of gold. So much to live for.

I've listened to this man pour his heart and soul out, for several hours a week, for 8 years. If you've never heard The Howard Stern Show, it's as intimate as entertainment gets. You know these people.

Regular listeners knew he was off the wagon, but I don't think anyone saw this coming. cry

Goes to show, money aint everything. He could have such a fantastic and comfortable life but he can't separate himself from the devil inside. Terrible. I hope he finds his way back to really living and slays that thing once and for all.

That's too bad, sounds like a guy who was using again. I mean, seriously, who stabs themselves? The last time I'd seen photos of him he looked awful. But he's a really talented guy, I hope he can get it together. I think he could be a lot more successful if he would, he's really funny.

my grandfather committed suicide when my dad was 13. he had worked at a bank in the international currency department because he spoke 6 languages. He lost his job because of the depression. Then, he became extremely depressed because he had no money to rescue his brothers and sisters in Poland, and they were all killed in the holocaust.
One day, my dad, 13 at the time was told "watch your father". My dad went to the kitchen to get something to drink, and when he came back to the living room, his dad was gone, and there was an open window. My grandfather jumped out
and had killed himself. My dad has never ever gotten over it. There are still nights when he cries in his sleep. My dad is 82 now, and he's still not over it. He can't go to the cemetary to see the grave anymore, because he has nightmares after.

I don't understand the thought process which leads an invidual to decide that killing one self is the best answer, and then actually having the guts to do it.
yes, the guts to do it, because our instinct is to protect ourselves, and here an individual overrides that very instinct....

'I am in so much pain and I can't see any way out of it. I can't take this anymore.'

There's always a way out of your pain. But you need a guide to get you started on the route; a professional. They're not all cut from the same cloth. If the first one you see doesn't help, try another. And so on and so on. Don't attach a stigma to taking medication: the same way there are illnesses of the body that require medicine, there are illnesses of the brain that require the same.

It's one of the great tragedies of our world that our mental health isn't treated the same way as our physical.
