I know Richard Widmark was not racist. He and Sidney Poitier became fast friends after they worked together in Sidney's debut film, "No Way Out." Also, Gregory Peck was good friends with the black actor who played the man he defended in "Too Kill a Mockingbird."

That's sooo great. mushy

Marlon Brando. I want to see more of his films. And sadly, I've never seen a whole movie starring Lena Horne. Well, time for me to visit amazon.com. lol

You've never seen The Wiz?

LOL! Of course. lol That's my favorite movie.

I meant HER films though, where she's the leading lady, like Cabin In The Sky, and Stormy Weather. I've only seen clips from each of those films.

LOL. I've read that most of that book was fictitious. Joan adopted two more girls, who were not shown in the film, and both claim majority of those scenes in the movie based on the book did not happen. Faye Dunaway even regretted playing that role, and stated that it ruined her career as a lead actress. Most viewers did not appreciate it, and thought it was a comedy. lol

I like both Crawford's and Hepburn's styles. They were very unusual/unique during their prime years, as actresses and as images.

Yeah, playing Joan Crawford did ruin Ms. Dunawawy career. "Mommie Dearest" stayed on the NY Times best seller list for 3 years. After Ms. Dunaway did the film, for two years Saturday Night Live mercilessly did pardoy skits based on Ms. Dunaway performance. It got so bad, she called the producers of SNL and begged them not to do anymore coat hanger jokes.

As far as what went down with Ms. Crawford daughter and son, I'm not sure. Needless to say Chrisine Crawford wrote the book after her mother passing. Child actor Jackie Copper backed up one or two of Christine claims; I believe it's three sided story with the 3rd part being the truth. Crawfords other two children said much of what Christine said didn't happened or not the way she claimed. I do recall at the time, a handful of Crawford's friends said Christines allegations of abuse weren't true.

At that you may want to read, "Not the Girl Next Door: Joan Crawford, a Personal Biography" by Charlotte Chandler

It gives a lil' bit more of a comprehensive look at Ms. Crawford life. After reading that book I wonder why her friends didn't stand up to defend her character lil' bit more vigoroulsy.

Thanks for that info. smile I haven't been interested in reading "Mommie Dearest," but "Not The Girl Next Door" sounds good.

Joan wasn't well liked in the Hollywood community and that is also why a lot of people didn't defend her. Plus most of those who knew her are dead. Also, Joan was also nasty. She was very nasty toward Liz Taylor and Marilyn. There is a video of Joan basically dissing liz on youtube.

I have a video of an old interview of her by an English reporter (I think it was from the mid-1960s), where she admitted to criticizing Liz's personal life, but then complimented her acting ability. This interview is on the special features of the 2-disc "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane" DVD set.

Found that interview I referred to, on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/wa...PJ2UtB6k8Y

Regarding Liz as an actress: "This girl, I think, has developed into one of the finest actresses on the screen that I've ever seen." - Joan Crawford.

lol

That's not the case and that's why I enjoyed Ms. Chandler book... interesting read. I think Crawford is one of those types either she loves you to pieces or she hated your guts, no shades of grey. But in-terms of the "old guard" she had friends very close friends, they spoke well of her. Crawford wasn't any different than Davis, as both approached middle age, they became a lil' bitchy to some of the younger upcoming actresses. The stories how Kate Hepburn treated Elizabeth Taylor during the filming of "Suddenly Last Summer" are legendary.

In terms of the feud of between Davis and Crawford... it appears Davis started and never let it go. Jealousy and the fact Davis thought Crawford was a phony. If you've ever seen some of Ms. Davis's interviews she'll go on and on about how MGM Studios (Crawford studio) went all out to make and treat their actors like stars while Warner Studios (her studio) treated their actors like stage hands.

Liz was definetely not racist. I have never heard of her having anything against black people.

Actually, she wanted Sammy Davis Jr. to play her lover in The Sandpiper but the studio decided against it due to all of the controversy it would have caused at the time.

Incredible! See, I knew it. lol I also could tell by the way she treated MJ when they became friends. She's a very, very, very, nice lady.

Yes, she stood by MJ when the rest of his hollywood friends turned their backs on him, and if you say anything bad about him, you ain't heard the last from her nod

Bette was batshit crazy and I have no doubt she started any feud between her and Joan. Joan at least did not go out of her way for the most part to be nasty to other women. Bette would do that and more. But still, I am not a Crawford fan.
Give me Ava, Liz, Grace, Veronica, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Kim Novak, Janet Leigh, Jean Simmons, Una Merkel. Those are my people.

Ha, that's funny. She loved being crazy characters in her films too. lol

That reminds me of a documentary I watched about both of them. The historians claimed that when Joan left MGM and signed to Warner Bros, which was Bette's territory, she tried her best to become friends with her, and would have flowers and greeting cards sent to Bette's dressing room. It's reported that Bette would say, "What is all of this crap?" or something like that, lol, and refused to be nice to Joan. Then Joan started to resent Bette's rudeness, and that's when the "rivalry" started.
