I all all 4 of them too. What do you think of Tallulah Bankhead?

I haven't seen any of her films. Is she a really great actress too?

Yes, very good. Reminds me a lot of Bette Davis actually. Although sadly she didn't make as many films as she should have...she made several but was also really big on the stage in the plays, etc.

You would probably like her if you like the 4 ladies you mentioned...she had a similiar personality and acting style to them. She sadly isn't talked about very much though anymore.

Liz's character as Martha in Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf is said to be based on Tallulah.

Wow. Every time I watch classic films, I wonder if the stars were racist. Some, like Crawford, Liz, and Lucille Ball, don't seem like they displayed racial prejudice at all. But the rest, well, I'm sure the majority were indeed racists. neutral

Liz was definetely not racist. I have never heard of her having anything against black people.

Actually, she wanted Sammy Davis Jr. to play her lover in The Sandpiper but the studio decided against it due to all of the controversy it would have caused at the time.

Liz was not racist and neither was Jean Harlow. Ava Gardner was not either. In her autobio she talks about the fact that when she was around 8, her father forbid her to keep being friendly with a little black boy her age. As a kid, Ava was puzzled by this and years later realized her father's racism stemmed from old family stories that the family had black ancestry. Ava said if she was indeed descended from blacks, that was fine with her. This makes sense to me, because I have always said that Ava looked like she had black blood. Lena Horne said Ava was "down."

Dorothy Lamour, hailing from New Orleans and Kay Francis were rumored to have black ancestry. Looking at both of them, I can certainly see it.

Myrna Loy was not racist either and Hattie McDaniel said that Clark Gable always spoke to her made sure she was comfortable on the set of Gone With the Wind.

James Dean and Marlon Brando also were not racist

LOL. I've read that most of that book was fictitious. Joan adopted two more girls, who were not shown in the film, and both claim majority of those scenes in the movie based on the book did not happen. Faye Dunaway even regretted playing that role, and stated that it ruined her career as a lead actress. Most viewers did not appreciate it, and thought it was a comedy. lol

I like both Crawford's and Hepburn's styles. They were very unusual/unique during their prime years, as actresses and as images.

I read the book too and I don't think it is fake. In the time since it was published, others, stars of Joan's era and others have talked about her cruelty toward her first two kids. Also, Joan was a lot older when she adopted those twins and it is not unheard of for parents to abuse some of their children and not others.

Either way, there are lot of stories and anecdotes that paint Joan as a very disturbed chickie. You should read Shirley Temple's book-in it she talks of how Joan creeped her out and gave her a half dead puppy and. Anita Page, a silent screen star who began her career at the same time as Joan was traumatized by her so much that her mother had to intervene.

I heard or read somewhere Elizabeth Taylor's looks were the inspiration for Disney's Snow White.

I loved her, Rock Hudson, and James Dean in Giant. That's one of my favorite classic movies even though it's a little over the top! I just love that movie.

Oh, and I loved her and Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Paul Newman was a hottie... even up to when he died. To this day, we only buy Paul Newman's (Newman's Own) salad dressing--well most of the time because the proceeds go to charity.

Grace Kelly, I love her, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra in High Society. I also loved her in Rear Window(??)-the one with Jimmy Stewart.

Also her daughter Princess Caroline is still so beautiful and her kids are very gorgeous. I just saw a pic of them not to long ago.. I have a friend who looks a little like Princess Caroline. I hate her. Nah.. just kidding. She's really beautiful and nice, too.

Yeah, playing Joan Crawford did ruin Ms. Dunawawy career. "Mommie Dearest" stayed on the NY Times best seller list for 3 years. After Ms. Dunaway did the film, for two years Saturday Night Live mercilessly did parody skits based on Ms. Dunaway performance. It got so bad, she called the producers of SNL and begged them not to do anymore coat hanger jokes.

As far as what went down with Ms. Crawford daughter and son, I'm not sure. Needless to say Christine's Crawford wrote the book after her mother passing. Child actor Jackie Copper backed up one or two of Christine claims; I believe it's three sided story with the 3rd part being the truth. Crawfords other two children said much of what Christine said didn't happened or not the way she claimed. I do recall at the time, a handful of Crawford's friends said Christine allegations of abuse weren't true.

At that you may want to read, "Not the Girl Next Door: Joan Crawford, a Personal Biography" by Charlotte Chandler

It gives a lil' bit more of a comprehensive look at Ms. Crawford life. After reading that book I wonder why her friends didn't stand up to defend her character lil' bit more vigorously.

Let's discuss her if anyone is a fan of hers on here.

Reading into this thread I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like her. Wondering if I'm allowed to discuss that too?
I always found her, I don't know, cold, she had this cold look, a bitchy look in her eyes, like she could be really mean and jealous and would step over bodies to achieve what she wanted.
And her acting was imo somewhat soap like, fake.
But she was nevertheless gorgeous, absolutely but her giving me this feeling made me uninterested in her looks.
As a kid we had a Belgian chanel with loads of old movies and I loved to watch those movies, movies with Spencer Tracy, Gene Kelly, Katherine Hepburn, Mickey Rooney and ofcourse Liz. And I was surprised when I once saw a movie of her as a kid. I would think that someone with such a long acting experience would be a much better actrice. I've never seen interviews though which could give me another impression.

But that is all my opinion and most of you disagree so please continue the thread with love and thanks for letting me give my opinion wink

When asked the color of her eyes, Elizabeth has always said, “They’re blue, but have a few red flecks. So, does that make them purple?”
