So HELL YEAH, I think it's appropriate to ask a guest to take their shoes off in my house. As a matter of fact, I keep a basket of fresh booties/footies at my front and back doors, just in case their socks are dirty. Y'anno???!!! I love that! It's like, " don't worry, Boo, I got a basket of freshly laundered and sanitized foot accountrements right there for ya, take those thangs you are wearing off in.my.house."

It's their house. Their rules. It's appropriate for them.
The best is when you have to take your shoes off but their house is a mess and looks like shit. We don't ask this of guests. And I don't care for it being asked of me, for vain reasons . Shoes are part of my outfit if I go to a dinner/house party. My outfit is not complete without shoes.

I have beautiful hardwood floors throughout my house so I always ask people to take their shoes off. Especially in winter.

I ask people to take off their shoes when they come in my house. It's the rule, especially in winter time. No one is special enough to track snow, mud, water, and dirt on my carpet and me clean up after them.

Your house - your rules I see nothing wrong with people requesting shoes off at entry I know some people though that you would MUCH rather they keep their shoes on ... sweaty stinky foot marks can be just as nasty as any bottom of the shoe junk possibilities

As for the shoe thing, I don't ask my guests to remove their shoes. I completely understand if it's due to cultural reasons or bad conditions outside that will result in tracking in the house. In Texas, neither of those are really an issue and I think there's nothing tackier than walking up to a front door with 20 pairs of shoes outside. I've been to homes where they ask you take your shoes off but I've NEVER seen anyone provide booties or slippers or tell me in advance that shoes weren't allowed. I was really annoyed to have to walk around barefoot which I never do even in my own house. I would never do that to a guest.
Here's a hint, if you choose to get white or delicate carpet be prepared to clean it all the time, get it stained eventually, or don't have company. [Edited 1/5/10 9:02am]

Agreed. Being from the mid-south, we went barefoot way more than wearing shoes, while at home. Who needs them. But man, after the first five seconds on hot pavement, you're jumping on cool grass pretty quickly.

I have a carpet runner in the front hallway to wipe your feet on. I don't ask people to take off their shoes, but my carpet is kind of thick, so it feels nice to be barefoot. "Love Hurts. I think it's inappropriate to ask guests to remove their shoes once they enter your home so that you can keep their carpet clean and I think its rude for guests to kick off their shoes once they are in your home like they are going to stay the night too. Just my personal opinion. I really don't care to smell funky corn chips all night. If folks are that worried about their carpet, then just get hardwood floors. I have a tile foyer that's about 4.5' x 7', so there's room for folks to take off their shoes, and come on in. I sometimes have a rug down there, but right now I don't (oddly, in the middle of winter).

a lot of cultures require removal of shoes when entering a home.
it's surprising americans don't follow suit. i think it's okay to ask guests to remove shoes, as long as you provide house slippers for them to wear. just my 2c
