Xbox Live Issue - Help Please!

So, I get my son the 360 Arcade last Xmas, and for this Xmas, got him a HD with a membership to Xbox Live. For some reason we cannot connect to Xbox Live, it says we are connected to the internet and the network, but cannot connect to Live. So I googled, and went to support at Xbox, but short of reprogramming my computer, my router, and the Xbox, this is driving me nuts! Does anyone know of a shorter fix, so we can get connected? I don't want to reprogram everything if I don't have to. Xbox phone support was no help either, they said I had to contact Linksys, which is my router/gateway, they said it's their fault. Appreciate any help! I wish this was as easy as connecting to PS network! neutral

Are you familiar with port forwarding?

Wireless or Wired?

Are you getting an error code?

Sorry, I am not familiar with port forwarding. My router is wireless, but we actually ran an ethernet cord from the router to the xbox. The only message we're getting is that it cannot connect to xbox live, it shows the path of the xbox to network to internet than a red x then the xbox live icon. It allows you to choose an option, which is turning off the router and retrying, which we have done, but doesn't work. Then the other option was to go to the website, which recommended the complete reprogramming of my computer, the router and the xbox, and it did mention some stuff about ports.

After you connection fails, hit the "more information" option. There should be an error code in there somewhere.

Are you using the "Join Xbox Live link under his profile to start the process?

Also, if this is the first time connecting the xbox to the web, what does his interface look like?

Does he have a little avatar or is it the blade menu style?

Yes we tried it this way, first says checking network status, then says cant connect to xbox live. Select Test Connection to troubleshoot your connection. for more into go to xbox.com/support. Then you get 2 choices, test connection or cancel, if you select test connection, it brings up several choices, configure network, test xbox live connection, test pc connection, test windows media center. We selected test xbox live connection, the test status shows connected to network, connected to internet, then the red x shows up for xbox live connection. The message then says problem with connection, selected more info, it says console is connected to the internet, but cant connect to xbox live, turn router or modem off and on then wait 30 sec, did that did not work. So next we selected try another suggestion, it said, on your pc go to your router configuration web page and make sure port 3074 is open on your firewall, if it is open, it may be blocked outside your home network, contact your ISP. If you are not familiar with networking, get help with firewall ports at blah blah.

I apologize in advance, and appreciate your help, I am not too computer literate, and am not familiar with what they are asking above with router configuration and all that. confused

No problem. I haven't seen a port forwarding issue actually stop a connection, it can cause issues, but not stop the connection.

If that 1st link doesn't help, this site explains port forwarding:

http://portforward.com/

It's really not too difficult and if you set up your router, you can handle it.

I'm not thinking very well today, too much xmas tequila.

The 1st thing I would try is to directly connect your modem to the xbox and try it.

If that works, then you'll be looking to the router as the culprit.

Have you 'reset' your router i.e. turned it off then turned it back on?

I've given up. Yes I have reset the router, went through the instructions at xbox, no luck. I am going to try the port forwarding thing again. I went through and ensured the ports they suggested were open on my computer, but still no luck connecting to xbox live. We got so frustrated with it, we gave up and went back to PS3 online. I'll give it one more shot tomorrow when I have more time. Again, thanks for the advice! mad sad

Did you bypass the router and connect directly to your modem?

What model is the router?
