The Other George Michael Died

Yeah, the headline got my attention too. I misread the little headline on CNN.com and fucking freaked out. My eyes instantly watered up. I had totally forgotten about the sportscaster with the same name. He passed away at age 70. He had quite a career and life.

Sportscaster George Michael dead at 70

Washington (CNN) -- Veteran sports anchor George Michael died early Thursday after a two-year battle with cancer, according to his former TV station.

Michael, 70, was known nationally for "The George Michael Sports Machine," a syndicated TV show that ran nationwide for 27 years.

He was a fixture on TV for more than 25 years in Washington, where he was a sports anchor on NBC's channel 4, producer Matt Glassman said.

"George was a pioneer in sports broadcasting," Glassman said. "He was a gifted interviewer, a master storyteller, and one of the hardest working journalists out there."

Michael retired from broadcasting in March 2007.

"Our hearts go out to his wife Pat and his daughter Michelle, both of whom also worked with us for many years, as well as the rest of his family," Glassman said.

True. I loved the way he and Vance parlayed(?). They were hilarious when they "got into it." I misted up when I saw the news of his death. He was really a class act and a great entertaining sportscaster, and I am not that all into sports, but I loved his commentary. RIP. rose
