It's the strangest thing, these little dark haired, caramel skinned, slanted eyed, bundles of cuteness walking around here everywhere. They're all carrying around little teddy bears and books and other toys that they received for Christmas.

It looks like Santa in Thailand visits Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians alike and they're all happy for celebrating it. Everyone's in a good mood, many folks went to 'Christmas parties' last night, and Thais love the ceremony of gift exchanges.

I was walking home from a lovely Christmas gathering last night and we walked past a rather large decorated Christmas tree in the road, decorated with bows and lights. And no more than 20 feet away from it was a rickety old cart being pushed by a woman selling instant coffee drinks (very typically Thai), and I couldn't help but giggle.

These folks have absolutely no insecurities about partaking in the customs of other cultures and religiouns! Any cause for celebration is going to be embraced here. Lawd, are these folks gonna be thrilled when Hanaka finally makes it's way to them---7 days of fun


Yup, Santa loves kids of all creeds here.


I do get the sense that the Jehovas Witness children might be fucked though. Thai openness can only do so much to influence Santa.

Mae said to me last night "This is your farang new year. We will have ours on the 1st of January". Wrong twice!

As an ex-pat I know said, many Thais seem to think Christmas does last for several days and that there's not so much of a focus on the 25th above other days before and after it. A bit like Songkhran perhaps.

Kids in Thailand have their own kids day to make up for those who don't get anything at Xmas, so they get that, our new year, Thai new year, Chinese new year and for some, Xmas too! Thais love a good holiday.
