You know, now that I think about it, maybe it's butter that they consume more per capita than anybody else. Whatever. They got some nice good eats there and I think I would fit right in with that.

I would have been surprised with New York if I hadn't met so many new yorkers this past summer.

A lot of youngsters seemed disgruntled with their life.
I was a bit shocked, cuz I thought it was the most amazing city I've ever seen and I've seen a lot.
I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

To me, a city should be like a good operating system (I'm talking about Mac OS-X, folks). It should have a lot of features, be highly usable, but ultimately blend into the background and allow you to do your THANG without imposing itself on you. New York City is like Mac OS-X, where L.A. is like Windows Vista (sorry folk who live in L.A. boxed ).

I feel the same way about Tampa vs. Miami. Tampa is almost Mac OS-X (transportation keeps it from being that), while Miami is definitely Windows Vista.

However, I didn't find New York to be anymore amazing than many of the cities I visited. It reminded me a lot of Hong Kong but with more diversity. I'd definitely go back and live there for a few years, but I'm curious... why do you consider it so amazing?

I loved the density, the friendliness, the attitude, the vertical orientation. It combines the sass of a European city with the energy and pulse of American metropolis. It made a much better first impression on me then Chicago (which I ended up loving).

To be frank when I said a lot of cities, I meant Europe. I've not ventured outside that part of the world much.

aaand I've only been in New York three days during the summerm in beautiful weather, meeting wonderful people. I'm biased.

I have to agree with this. I don't think there's a city on earth that is quite as much fun. I just found out the other day, Bangkok even has an amusement park nearby somewhere falloff !!!

It's amazing to have a city of 10 million (or possibly even 15 million), multi-cultural, and multi-national, where everyone so eagerly smiles.

If it only had the usability of New York City, Bangkok would be perfect. Being able to travel less than 2 hours to tropical beaches is..... amazing.

What operating system would Bangkok be in your analogy? lol

Yep, Bangkok has 'Dream World', some kind of mini Sea World thing, and I believe an indoor ski slope. I've never been to any of them.

Chonburi, Bang Saen... beaches an hour or so away. Just 2 or 3 hours can get you to gorgeous beaches at Cha-Am and Ao Manao. cloud9 Phuket... Koh Samui... or mountains and hill tribes in Chiang Mai... Pai... pick your idea of paradise and fly there within 90 minutes for under $40. cool

Just thought of an example. Our friend Jane drove over to meet up for lunch at a little place around the corner from us. On the spur of the moment we decided to have that lunch by the beach. An hour later we were in Bang Saen, sitting on the beach, eating seafood and having a nice cold beer (well, I was). We relaxed for a few hours and were back in bustling Bangkok around dinner time. Awesome! lol Another time we just as spontaneously decided to go down there and stay a night. I love being able to have day trips and take mini holidays like that and get the most out of the time, with so little wasted on the actual traveling.

What is the water like in Ban Saeng? I wouldn't get in it around the oyster farms, but is it clean enough to swim in around the pedestrian beaches?

lol Why did I click on that? eek

Anyway... the water looks relatively clear and clean, but they do get lots of jellyfish there at certain times. It's definitely more of a short getaway or day trip for Thais type place rather than a place to attract foreigners. Not fancy at all, just lots of open campsite-looking places with little bungalows.

there is an argentinian salad where everything is drowned in mayo barf I can hardly stand to look at it!

I can only stomach a little mayo to keep a sandwich from being dry. If I see a sandwich with mayo creeping out the sides, then I usually take some of it off.
