anyone catch it last night ... i am sure it is something that is repeated constantly by HBO

had to keep one eye closed during some of the brutal fight scenes (for those of u who have never seen it ... it is 2 guys with very little rules beating each other to a pulp)

no wonder the guy got addicted to pain killers ...

but the big !!?? i wanna know is - did i really hear that they only made like $3,000.00 per fighter for the fight ... ouch ... those guys looked like it woulda taken a month to get over those injuries ... ouch ... (if they did get over em ... ouch ...)!!!

I would expect the big-name guys to get more than $3,000 per fight, or they couldn't afford to train all the time and not have jobs.

Who was on the show? I watch Pride Fighting and UFC religiously and I hope that these guys get what they deserve. I will have to watch that show next time it comes on.

It highlighted a fighter by the last name of Kerr ( I forget his first name ... kevin ...tim !!?? )

I think it was Pride ... (japaneese!!??) as far as the name of the Ultimate 's version of the WWF (!!??)

It was good - it showed this guy training ... he was a wrestler in high school ... he was undefeated in the Ultimate Fighting... then ... in I believe 10/99 he lost his first match (I believe it was later changed to "no contest" cause the guy who was declared the victor used some questionable holds (knee-ing to the face) ...

This guy basically got hooked on narcotics - easy to see because of all the abuse his body was taking daily (training, etc) ... he had to take some time off ...

When he came back ... about 8 of them were in a tournament (which I believe lasted like 4-5 months) and the victor of this tourney was to win like $200,000 ) ...

I won't go into too many details of the story , but it was a good documentary and their were some twists and turns that kinda kept me watching ... brutal sport though ... especially if they dont make that much money ... I mean the guys that they showed from the U.S. didnt look like they were really well off (although they were drivin nice trucks/cars than I )

... I think it was on the main HBO last night around 9:30-11:15 or so ...


... and why am i not surprised u watch this stuff religiously ... pagan!!!

That sport is brutal! I have some customers that r regulars at the japanese rest I work at. They run an ultimate fighting gym and compete locally as well as nationally. One of their head trainers was the ultimate fighting champion for like 5yrs running..randy...and now he is competing in the "eco-challenge" a show for t.v being taped now. They r insane. Every week someone comes in to eat that has a black eye or broken arm. All have cauliflower ears, but they r all exceptionally fit and watch their diets..much discipline they have.

Did anyone watch the Pride Fighting Championship over the weekend?

Kevin Randleman taught Murilo Ninja Rua a fucking lesson... nice knockout... quite unexpected. Randleman is a monster and has come a long way since losing to Bas Ruten.

The hometown Dallas fighter, Guy Mezger, did not do enough and lost a decision to the latest Nogueira to enter the ring, Rogerio Nogueira. This fight sucked and was boring... I couldn't understand why Mezger didn't take the initiative... he just wouldn't do it.

Ron Waterman got a win by a brutal submission hold on Valentijn Overeem... it looked like he ripped his shoulder out of the socket. Good move.

I watched the documentary last night and I must say that I wondered what was wrong with Mark Kerr in his last few fights... he just got totally gassed out and lost. I didn't know that he was a giant drug addict with a psychotic girlfriend who totally effected his training. He used to be really good and then he lost it and now I know why... he hasn't fought since 2001 when he got knocked out by Heath Herring.

I remember being disappointed in his technical draw with
Igor Vovchanchyn... the knees to the head had been made illegal when your opponent was on four points, yet Vovchanchyn landed about 4 solid knees to the head and they stopped the fight... no DQ, just a technical draw when the result was changed.

I don't know how much the technical draw effected him, but the drugs were certainly a big problem and I cannot even believe that he was able to get in shape and fight when he was shooting up 10 times a day.

Really, really sad.

I almost stayed up to watch it again ... it was pretty cool ... i had missed the beginning of it ... (thought maybe they would tell more about how much those guys do bring home ...

It kinda looked to me ... that they were "huge" in Japan ... but lived rather modestly ... (smallish townhouses/condos in U.S.) altho that Kerr guy did drive a big SUV - Saddamm $$$ guzzler !!!??? lol (u can tell i drive an old beat up vw convert- damn krautburner)

I don't imagine that those guys make the kind of money that a world champion boxer makes, but I would imagine that they make a hell of a lot more than most boxers. They won't be able to compare to mainstream sports in terms of money, but then again, these guys are martial artists or collegiate/olympic wrestlers... where else would they make the kind of money they can there?

I am curious though and I will try to find out what those guys make.

hey Ice - who was that guy that was Kerr's training guy ... and then became the champion ... !!?? I was so impressed by that DEVIL-like guy he took on ... the one that was in the swimming pool at one point ... looking so evil ... and looked to be 6'10 compared to the other guy at 6'2 or so ... I thought the devil guy was gonna open up a can of wup ass ... and he never did ... sheesh ...for a couple of seconds I felt bad for his "hot ass" wife and family at home ... and why couldnt Kerr get a "hot ass " chick like that - instead of some psycho alcy bitch from hell !!!

PRIDE: Some fighters can fight so defensively that they can make the most aggressive fighters looking boring but you've never had that problem. You're able to make it into an exciting match. Do you think the ability to make it into an exciting match is an indication of how well you'll do in the sport and how much money you'll make?

Frye: One would like to think so, yeah. (laughing) The bottom line is how much the promoter wants to pay you.

CB: If I knew I would be doing it. (laughs) We definitely need to get larger sponsors like corporate sponsors involved in the sport and have them supporting and backing up the MMA/NHB. Also make more money outside the sport like endorsements, sponsors from these corporate sponsors and the more big name corporate sponsors we can get to sponsor and support the sport the more people are going to start watching it. This will bring more money to the promoters which means that more money would be paid to the fighters. This is one of the reasons I only have a little more time left in the sport as a fighter. I put so much physically and financially into getting ready for a fight that I am just barely breaking even with the amount of money I get paid. I can make more money at home teaching my NG team so it is just not that much fun to fight for me anymore.

Maurice Smith: Yeah, you know I understand the fair amount of loyalty the promoters want, but the promoters aren't paying the money where a fighter can sit back and fight just once or twice a year. If you're going to pay a fighter 100 grand to fight every fight, then I'm sure he can be able to only fight two or three times a year. But when you're paying a fighter 15, 20, 40 or whatever per fight, that doesn't last long, after taxes and everything like that. The promoters don't understand that for the fighters, this is their living. The difference I have is that I'm a kickboxer, I can fight for K-1 or whatever. Most of these guys who are wrestlers or submission guys can only fight for the UFC or Pride or WEF, and that doesn't give them much income. There ought to be a better way for them, whereas I have a second income. But it's not fair for the promoters to sign a guy for one contract. What could happen is that you could have a contract with one guy for three or four fights, and he fights so rarely he doesn't make any money. The promoters should make it so the wording of the contract makes it so the fighter can fight a lot, and make some money. Then he'll stick with you.

Sherdog.com: I know a lot of fighters complain about that. They always say the UFC tries to screw everybody with the exclusive contracts.

Maurice Smith: Right. Exclusivity is nice, but it's not fair to the fighter. If you're an ok, fighter, not a great fighter, and you fight once or twice a year, making between two thousand and ten thousand dollars per fight, you're going to make between four thousand and twenty thousand dollars per year. That's all you can do, that's not fair to the fighter. I understand that the promoter's got to make his money, but the fighter's got to make his money too, so it's hand in hand. The promoter helps to build the fighters, but the fighter helps to build the promoters as well.

Hmmm... I wonder if the lack of any real money in this is why Shamrock left UFC and went to WWF in the late '90s. I would imagine that WWF would have paid more than what it appears that Pride or UFC pays them. Anyone know why he left? I can't remember who he last fought before he went to WWF.

But, then again he did return to fight Oritz late last year, so maybe not. That fight didn't last long, if I remember... didn't Shamrock only get to the third or fourth round before he called it off and stopped it? In any case, I remember it was early on in the fight.

Which brings me to this... if someone leaves UFC or Pride to get into WWF can they just come back to fight any time they want? Is the door always open to these guys?

I did tune in to watch him on WWF and couldn't believe that this guy used to be in REAL fights and now there he was acting like a doofus on WWF. *sigh* Very disappointing, but probably worth it for the money.
