Yeah, I start this every year around the Holiday season, but I think it's important to point out how we let myth affect our rituals. Some folks may find the tribe I'm about discuss strange, but isn't setting up a dead tree in your living room and throwing lights on it sort of strange?


The tribe is called the Etoro tribe.

I'd have to do some digging to find it, but I think I read a study on this tribe and human sexuality a long time ago, and it was fascinating. It had a lot of insights into how this tribe could help us understand male sexuality more. There were a certain percentage of boys (and I believe it remained relatively unchanged over the years) who absolutely refused to go along with it and would rather run off and live by themselves than do it. Similarly, there was a percentage that continued on living gay and were more than happy to participate in this. And then there was the majority, who did it but then went on being straight. It was an interesting perspective about the nature of sexuality and an argument against the belief that everyone is bisexual.
