Johnny Depp says he gets 'stupefied' by winning awards for his acting at 21:26 on December 13, 2009, EDT.
By Megan Reynolds, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NASSAU, Bahamas - Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp suspects he'll never get used to receiving awards for his acting work. Depp, best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" blockbusters, made the comments Sunday night before receiving a career achievement award at the Bahamas International Film Festival. "Whenever anybody say they are going to give me some kind of award, I'm always a little stupefied by the notion. The first thing I say is 'why?'," Depp told a small scrum of reporters. "I just go to work like anyone else, except my job happens to be a little stranger." Lit by cameras during a red carpet event, Depp said he planned on spending Christmas on his private island ringed with white sand off Exuma. "The place is as close to paradise as anywhere you can get," said Depp, wearing a black pinstriped suit and tinted glasses with heavy black frames. Fellow acting superstar Sean Connery, who also owns a home in the Bahamas, presented Depp with the award at the Balmoral Club in Nassau. The festival's founder, Leslie Vanderpool, described Depp as an "icon" who is one of the finest actors of his generation. "What makes this tribute to Johnny even more special is that he has a home in the Bahamas and possesses a true love and appreciation for the region and culture," Vanderpool said in a statement. Depp's diverse screen credits through the years include starring roles in "Donnie Brasco," "Edward Scissorhands," and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." In September, Disney announced that a new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film is on the horizon. Depp will reprise his celebrated role as Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," slated for summer of 2011. Depp said he's enjoyed playing all of his screen characters. "I'm still amazed I get jobs after all this time," he quipped. ©The Canadian Press, 2009 Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! One of the most versatile/intersting actors in our time
I've yet to see him & Philip Seymour Hoffman in a supbar per4mance,,,,aside from the TV series he did in the late 80s But both actors kill the cliche when it comes to the "absorbing the character" factor because they truly do absorb those characters they play

I've told this story many times here before I'm sure, but my older sister went on a date with him back in his 21 Jump Street days. She even kissed him!
and then she never went out with him again because she thought he was a dork. Now she's kicking herself of course. I told her she should have at least slept with him!!! oh, and my sister's name is Vanessa too. I just want to know what s up with the Public Enemies film.
Whats with the blu-ray disk and why does it look so, i guess pixelated in certain scenes of the film? I was so excited for it to come out, but super annoyed by how it looked in some scenes when I got it home. To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.

Oh yeah, I like his acting, too... I third that motion! Sure the man is beautiful, sexy and supercute but he possesses a talent like no other. Oh lawd, watching that man act is almost as good as having an orgasm And his whole attitude and personality, his "i don't give a damn but yet humble" attitude, especially around all the madness of Hollywood is even more attractive. What I wouldn't give to meet him in person I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I know I'm way in the minority here, but I think he is overrated as an actor. He's good, but I think his looks make people rate his performances much higher than they might otherwise.
I don't think he's one of the great actors, but he's much better than someone so handsome needs to be (much like George Clooney, and Brad Pitt to a lesser extent). I also think it's downright funny that people will say stuff like "he doesn't care about his image" when he so obviously does, and chooses just the right hat or bracelet, and seems very concerned in not appearing "Hollywood." But he is hollywood, he's one of the most glamorous hollywood actors of the past 20 years. It proves to me that men & women are not that different, and beauty makes people see what they want to see. It's early in her career, but I have noticed myself rating Katherine Heigl highly, too, and maybe too highly. I'll say "She's really pretty good!" and she is, but there might be some less beautiful actress that I am not noticing that is much better, even. But I really like watching Katherine Heigl. My Legacy

[Edited 12/14/09 11:46am] I agree to a point. I didn't really like Jack Sparrow past the first movie, and I didn't like Willy Wonka. But in movies like "The Libertine" and "The Man who Cried", I think he was really good. The thing I do like about him as an actor is that he will alter his looks in not-so-flattering ways to play the lead: "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"
